I’m not sure how I missed this thread both times! As I mentioned in another thread, I’m incredibly busy at the moment moving house and changing employers, but have been forced to take a break due to food poisoning (or Noro virus, not sure). I enjoyed reading the previous posts, but was of course sad to see the contributions from @jamesicus and remembering he won’t be joining us anymore. As for myself, I began collecting in high school when the states quarters program began. My local coin shop had some severan Denariis available, which of course opened up a whole new world for me. I had always been interested in History, so I bought two which are still part of my collection: Imperial Rome Caracalla, r. 198-217 A.D. (211 A.D.) Rome Mint, AR Denarius, 20.28mm x 2.8 grams Obv.: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT. Laureate bust, right Rev.: P M TR P XIIII COS III P P. Pax, draped, advancing left, holding branch in right hand and sceptre in left hand Ref.: SRCV 6824, RIC IV-1 Caracalla 184, p. 238, RSC 190 Note: My First Ancient Coin Imperial Rome Caracalla, r. 198-217 A.D. (205 A.D.) Rome Mint, AR Denarius, 19.17mm x 3.3. grams Obv.: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, Laureate bust right, draped Rev.: LIBERALITAS AVGG V, Liberalitus standing left, holding abacus and cornucopia Ref.: SRCV 6815 variety, RIC IV-1, 136b, p 232, RSC 124 my real interest in history has always been the Middle Ages, so I soon after decided to search eBay for medieval coins (eBay was still relatively new, and I don’t think there were as many swindlers back then): French Feudal - Poitou Richard I, r. 1168-1185 AR Denier, 17mm x 1 grams Obv.: +RICARDUS REX, cross patée, annulet in third quarter Rev.: PIC / TAVIE / NSIS, written in three parallel lines Ref.: AGC 343A (1/a), Duplessy 926, Roberts 3887, SCBC 8008, De Wit 394 Note: My First Medieval Coin coin collecting had to pause for college, as I was working full time and setting aside money to avoid getting in debt. I was mostly successful, but realized if I wanted to work in history, I would need to go to grad school. Since my interest was Medieval history, I decided to go to Europe and attended a school in NorthEastern England where I met my wife (fellow American). upon returning to the states with my PhD in Medieval History, I did the Adjunct lecturer circuit for a while. (This was right after the 2008 crash - no jobs were available) Once I tired of the exploitative direction universities had taken towards new hires, I decided to look into teaching high school and was lucky to find a good position at a good school. Once I had a full time gig again, I was able to restart my coin collection (well, my ancient & medieval collection - I had been saving pocket change the whole time, but it’s not the same…) No children, but a cat (I’m more of a dog person, but my wife is a cat person, so that means we have a cat…). Other hobbies include comic book collecting (I’m working on a full run of Amazing Spider-Man), reading, and hiking. As for my avatar, when I joined the boards I was looking to take the name “exchequer” because I had used a lot of the pipe rolls from the English exchequer in my doctoral research. Someone already had the name and I didn’t want to cause confusion by being “exchequer2.” So I decided to take the name of a medieval author who wrote a guide to the exchequer: Richard Fitz Nigel. I knew it was a stupid name at the time, but I never really participate in forums anyway, so I thought I would just be a lurker and occasional poster. Turns out I’ve participated much more than I anticipated, because you are all such lovely people. So I regret the name, but whatever - I’m stuck with it now. The coin that is my avatar was one I bought In 2016. It has no special significance, other than it being a nice looking coin (and it has been fun to photoshop for various occasions over the years).
I live in NW Indiana and have collected coins since I was small (1957). I've always been fascinated by coins that circulate or have circulated randomly. I've done many jobs but am retired now but am researching the pyramids and to a lesser extent all megalithic structures. My icon is an artist's rendition of the means I believe was used to build the great Egyptian pyramids. I've been selling my coins for a few years now to save my heirs the bother. I still collect a little and am not parting with all my collections.
OK, I will jump in. I do have a real name and I use it on zeno.ru. Like many others, my collecting focus has shifted over the years. Where once I collected any and everything coin wise, now I concentrate on mostly south Asia, ancient and medieval Indian coins. Deciphering the many different languages and scripts is a never ending challenge. Holding an old coin from the Silk Roads is really holding some history. I am retired, living in SE Asia for 16 years now. Life is good and I fully intend to live forever. I may as well post a coin. Latest acquisition: Mughal Empire, Aurangzeb Alamgir, AH1104/Ry.36, AR Rupee, minted at Itawa.
I'm sure I replied to this thread years ago, but in the event that anyone is still wondering who I am, here's an interview from Numisforums from December 29, 2023.
Pretty good write up there, Rob. I am especially interested in the Chinese find in NC, as that relates to me on many levels. I am still into the "squiggly" writing stuff, as you can see. Good luck with the dredge spoil shark teeth hunting!
Just to update my stuff/ since 2021 entry. Well BORING>>>>>>>>> Still making a living cutting grass/ weeding flowerbeds. I also like to research coins.... because of my mini-hoard from gathering them, I finally have time in retirement to research them.....
I figure it won't be a bad idea to share my CT origin story, which isn't quite well-known (aside from the numerous posts in which I deem it necessary to do so) and now I have an excuse to give the long version. I joined Cointalk when I was in my Freshman year of high school, but I had been lurking for a year prior, since I was 14. My best friend at the time told me about the (at the time) mythical wheat penny, and strangely enough, a week later I found one on the ground. Now because I was 14, I thought I would be rich, which wasn't true. Luckily I didn't start here asking if my '44-D would retire me at age 14. I learned from reading these posts, and for my first two years of collecting was an avid CRHer, finding war nickels, wheat cents, silver quarters, et cetera. Then I would move on to collecting 19th and 20th century US silver coins. In my Junior year of high school, I took a world history course, which spurred on my interest in Roman coins which continues to this day. That's my collecting journey anyway, now that I'm in college I put a halt to my collecting of Antonine denarii and am trying to piece together a better picture of the tetrarchy and beyond with late Roman bronze coins. That's my collecting journey. My personal life is much less interesting. I was raised in southeastern Minnesota, in the Great Plains, and had a normal American life growing up (aside from a significant lack of televised sports). Now I'm in Phoenix studying for a Business Administration degree. Presently, I am 19 years old and in the middle of my second semester. My other hobbies include powerlifting and military surplus collecting, and I used to collect action figures and LEGO Star Wars but I had to drop those since they became quite expensive. I have a pretty respectable collection of both, though. I recently went to a powerlifting meet and hit 195 on the bench, 325 on the squat, and 395 on the deadlift, though I think 405 was possible. My military surplus addiction began last year when I ordered an Austrian Kampfanzug 75 BDU shirt, it's treated me well since then. Personally, I love writing essays (weird, I know) about a range of topics including history and politics. My humor is drier than the Mojave Desert and is mostly propped up in my posts by the use of parentheses. I'm also a video game addict, and lately have been playing Fallout: New Vegas and War Thunder, as well as owning a Minecraft realm for some of my friends. I'm also a bit of a military history nerd and like to collect guns when budget permits (which it usually doesn't) but I'm trying to save up enough money to buy a CETME-C, which is essentially an HK G3 prototype built by German weapons designers in Spain post-WWII. It's a heavy, roller-delayed Semi-auto in 7.62 NATO with a 20-rd. standard detachable magazine, it's a machine for sure, with that classic German over-engineering. I'd definitely take it over a SOCOM-16 even if purely for aesthetic reasons. Presently, all I've got is an M24/47 with an M48 bolt in it for some reason, I'm looking for a correct bolt for it, though. Here's a photo of me firing it: This rifle for me has a dual purpose: Deer hunting and fun. I love heavy-caliber guns, and I'd say 8mm Mauser fits the bill. Lately I've been listening to some folk music, with Stan Rogers being one of my favorites. I'm also learning how to sing with some of my friends. I'm an outdoorsman, I love hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking when I get the chance. Typically I fish for northern pike and walleye, but bass are my favorite to catch. My last couple of jobs have been in a kitchen, outside of the fast-food industry thankfully. It's hard work, but beats talking to people in the drive-thru. here's my very favorite denarius, and the one that started it all: COS IIII (145-161), Rome. bust right Rs.Liberalitas l. with abacus and cornucopia. This is a pretty barebones description, I should probably add some detail in the future. And here is one of my first US coins from before I even started collecting: I got this when I was very young, probably 9 or so. This could be considered the beginning of my coin collection.
Your story got me to remember the time my ex and I purchased 100 acres of mixed range and wooded land in south central OK. Prior to building our home there my ex, who was in the OK National Guard, invited her first sergeant and a couple other guard friends over to shoot some of her first sergeant's gun collection; some that he couldn't shoot at local firing ranges. Included were numerous automatic and semi-automatic guns. I, for one, am not or ever has been a gun person and for the most part didn't take part of the battle; although I did shoot a Tommy-gun and oozie. My ex liked shooting so I think that she was in her element (I never wanted to piss her off after that). She let my son shoot a BAR which just about put him on his back. Thank goodness that there weren't any low flying aircraft at the time. I was surprised that someone didn't call the county sheriff before all was said and done. I'm glad that that was the first and only time she hosted war games on our property. For a while I thought that my nearest neighbors were scared to come over.
Great write-up. You seem to have all your bases covered Noah. And, pretty much like everything I like. Especially guns, hunting, and coins.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
