Question for rollsearchers

Probably made a rookie mistake today.

I hit the ATM and withdrew $100 and I went in to my local bank and started asking for rolls of coins. I asked for half dollars first and she said she had none. I started there attempting to do math in my head thinking $10/roll and working my way down from the hundred. When she said she didn't have any, I knew she had quarters, so I started working my way up.

"How many rolls of 'pennies' (thinking I needed to speak her language) can I get?"
    "How many do you want?"
    "How many can you spare?"
    "How many do you want?"
"As many as you can spare."

At this point she tells me $20 and seems really aggravated. So, I tell her I'll take them along with 6 rolls of quarters. At this point, I didn't have the heart to ask for anything else.

So, now I have plenty to do this weekend, but what am I going to do when I'm ready to redeposit what I don't want and I'm ready for more?

I should have consulted you guys to begin with.

I don't want them to dread seeing me come through the door. As many of you know, I have only recently started collecting and I have been banking with them for years. This is the first time I have ever walked in and asked for so much coinage. Any coinage, for that matter.

How do I handle this in the future and why don't they have half dollars?

lol Is that really how you did it? lol
Just go in there and tell her what you want. There's nothing wrong with getting change she gets and gives change all day long!~!
Commercial customers ask for lots of it. She has know idea that it's for your "evil" coin collecting and if she did she wouldn't care.
Just act like you've been there.

As for returning since I halve I stick out so I dont go back to the same branch. That's it. It's legal tender nothing wrong with it. She was probably upset that you took so long like a counter person at McDonalds when you don't know what you want.
Great story though. You should film that and put it on YouTube for us next time.
I bet BNB would have :D

You sound like me the first time I went in and asked for pennies. They then had to go through and mark out the account numbers on the rolls and tell me they were customer rolls so they may not have the exact amount in them.
To answer your question, I call and order boxes a week in advance so I dont take away from what they normally use and when I take back what I dont want, I go to a differant bank that has a coin counter so they dont get suspicious.
    Hope this helps

Thanks Duke, that makes me feel beter - LOL. Luckily, I think, I did go to a different branch than where I normally bank because I was afraid of exactly what happened.

Thanks financeman, maybe she got aggravated because it was her stash for the day. I didn't think about that. Is pre-ordering the way to get the halves?

Depending on the bank. Some banks just dont order or carry them. Once you find a bank that will order them then yes. That is the way to get them from them or accasionally they will have some behind the counter from customers bringing them in.:thumb:

  7. I usually go in with a specific amount in mind like a box of Lincoln cents and ask them for the oldest, dingiest box they have in the vault. I never dump the cents at the same place though. Get to know a specific teller and things will go even more smoothly. TC

Thanks for all the input. I knew I should have asked you guys first. I was wondering if it would help to go in and talk to my rep and give her a "heads up".

And one more question, when they "order" would I still get a mix of old and new, or just newer.

You get a mix of crculated coins so there will be both old and new in there.

I only get the rolls from banks I have an account with, why I don't know just seems right also if you have an account the teller shouldn't get upset with your request considering you do your regular banking with them in the first place. I also pick up and leave at a different banks.

I did the same thing a few months ago... went in to my bank and asked for Dollar rolls (stupid me what was I thinking) she looked at me like I was an alien. So I then asked for halves and she said she had none and that the bank would have to order them.

Unlike you I gave up and walked out....

Last week I went in to cash some EEE Bonds from when I was a kid. I was told that they do not sell or cash Savings bonds.

    Times have changed!!

For better or worse, I'm going to go in this morning on my way to work and talk to my account rep. I'm going to tell her my intentions of ordering on a regular basis and express my "concern" about how to go about redepositing as to not be a nuisance. Hopefully, this will smooth over any future "aggravation" in advance. I will also inquire into safe deposit boxes and maybe she'll see the extra "business" as a trade-off.

I also have two different banks that I deal with. One is strictly for bills. The other is my gas, groceries, beer, coins, etc account and I will let her know that I'm going to be depositing a lot at the "other" bank.

    We'll see how it goes.

A full service bank will cash them.

zzy-maybe they will let you have a standing order. Like a box (or 2 or 10) a week.

Turns out talking to her was a good move. Her husband collects coins! So, she knew exactly where I was coming from. So she placed the order for the half dollars, told me 2 days before I was ready to return them to give her a call and she would have another one waiting! Awesome!

So, I grabbed another box of cents and headed off to work. Can't wait to get home and tear into them!

Now if I could just get that encyclopedia (it's taking forever!)- I'm dying to read and study it.

Way to go, I am glad it worked out for you. Now if I can only find someone around here that will order halves for me. :rolling:

I've never done this, so maybe I'm speaking out of ignorance. Somebody wrote that you shouldn't worry about asking for rolls of change because retailers do it all the time. But then again I read that people go to different branches to deposit the coins back. Why? Don't retailers deposit their change at the same bank they got the change from in the first place? If you have an account with the bank, they should bend over backwards to help you. Do people think they are the only coin collectors that do this? The tellers know what's going on. They probably deal with collectors buying rolls at least ten times a day. They know who these people are. At my bank, all the tellers know my name. They know all their customer's names. To them, I am just as important taking my last $10 out of my checking account as the retailer depositing $10,000. The bank is there for you. If they get upset for something as simple as this, maybe you should look for another bank.

I hear ya Pilkenton, and the response at my regular branch was nothing like my maiden voyage yesterday at another branch. Maybe it was the familiar face like you said.

"A long time ago in a place far, far away" . . . I labored in the banking industry. Whenever a customer came in and made a specific request for roll coin, my tellers would always ask me how to handle it. I saw it as an opportunity to talk with the customer and learn more and offer services, like a safe deposit box. I would always have the head teller accommodate the order! After awhile, many of the customers learned that if they gave us a decent lead time, we could get them the roll coin in the denomination and quantity they wanted. (We had requests for US Mint roll wrap on many occasions.) I even convinced our Sr. VP to put in a coin counting machine for the customers to use when returning the coin. Often, a customer would seek me out and share a "find" from the roll search.

Best advice is talk to your local banker...
