I personally have subscribed to coin world for a very long time and I enjoy archiving magazines and chopping them up and making my own books out of all the articles alone advise it to do so because it becomes a long drawn out process but it's cool

I'm on the IDK boat. I read mostly online and have no money for subscriptions. :( Just for the internet.

You forgot a few other publications. Aside from joining a club publishing info on one series, I suggest any "serious" collector join ANA for the magazine/library and subscribe to Coin World and Numismatic News at the minimum.

I haven't used any of them for a while. Remember, the primary goal of any commercial publication is to make money. I have found that the editors are hesitant to publish articles that are negative with respect to their advertisers. So, you may not get the whole truth about all subjects. For example, they may run an article disclaiming the value of First Strike Certifications and accept a large add from a client selling such product. Doesn't this represent support of the product? So, you still have to do your homework regarding any investment.

What about CoinAge? That was the first mag I subscribed to back in 1973. I believe it is still out there... Admittedly pretty basic.

I think you example is backwards. Accepting advertising while criticizing their product seems to be honest journalism.

IMO, making money is a good thing to do. The major value of the publications is for numismatic info - nothing else! Numismatic info includes:

    coins for sale
    letters
    show info
    new discoveries
    numismatic articles

IMO, I disagree. The publications should point out scams and fallacies or the reader is getting mixed messages.

Not know which publication is best, have subscribed to several in on the list. Right I have Coin World & The Numismatist. I like the physical copies over the digital format.
My all time favorite writer is Michael Bugeja. He has wrote for several different magazines. He was always willing to share real world experiences and pitfalls of collecting. (Scams & etc)
Have not seen anything by him for awhile now. Anyone know what happened to him?

I would have included "COINage," but they have been on an "investment kick" of late, which not very interesting to me. Any magazine that takes up a lot of pages with price guides is useless so far as I'm concerned. Most of their price guides are inaccurate.

I'm going to let you have the last post BUT:

Inspector43, posted: "I disagree. The publications should point out scams and fallacies [related to numismatics] or the reader is getting mixed messages."

So we agree. Unfortunately, that is not what you wrote:

Inspector43, posted: "... Remember, the primary goal of any commercial publication is to make money. I have found that the editors are hesitant to publish articles that are negative with respect to their advertisers. [Although I cannot give an example, should think this is "good for business" and probably correct.] So, you may not get the whole truth about all subjects. For example, they may run an article disclaiming the value of First Strike Certifications and accept a large add from a client selling such product. Doesn't this represent support of the product? [ I'm confused. No, they are disclaiming it!!] So, you still have to do your homework regarding any investment."

I subscribe to Numismatic News. They have timely articles and it won’t break the bank.
They also have a excellent feature called “Making the Grade “by F. Michael Fazzari.

COINage is still out there. 6x a year. Greg Reynolds writes many interesting
articles for them. I started my sub back in Oct. 1971. Kept each issue. Started
piling up so I contacted the NNP in St. Louis. Delivered in Nov. 2019. Still
subscribe and will be mailing the issues to NNP.

Same here. I'm not super enthused about any of them.
Some coin magazines are targeting beginner/early intermediate collectors and get a bit repetitious after a while

@Insider I have had communications directly with publication editors that have admitted they were between a rock and a hard place when there is a conflict between some commercial advertisements and integrity of collector information. Out of respect for these editors I will not name any. I always appreciate your feedback.

Obviously, you are correct. I Know exactly what you are talking about from personal experience when I lost a monthly column in a publication due to pressure from a very large entity that I shall not name. o_O I did not wish to be as blunt about it as you are. Nevertheless, my disagreement is with the meaning of the word you used. Ditto your feedback. ;)

I like Canadian Coin News. there isn't as much focus on "high investment grade coins" (for me, not a big draw, but nice if you can do it!). They have regular columnists who write in an engaging style. For the many Canadian tokens, the stories seem to focus on the history of the coins rather than various Mint State complexities. The ancient coin columnist is excellent. There seems to be to be a overall "coin club" environment in Canada that hasn't disappeared as much as it has here in the USA, and the magazine reflects this, too.
