I've seen quite a few Newfoundland 50 cents in my local coin shops recently, often for quite cheap. I think I've put together a 50 cent ruler set by this point--Victoria, Edward VII, George V. Plus 3 more Victorias on the top row... Anyway, if you like coins from this province, please post some! Bonus coin pic: Victoria, 1899, 20 cents
I always noticed that the 50 Cent Newfoundland coins could be found much cheaper than the Canada issues. At least it seemed that way to me. Newfoundland - 50 Cents, 1900 Newfoundland - 50 Cents, 1907 Newfoundland - 20 Cents, 1900
Here's the rest of my Newfoundland collection: L to R, from top: 1 Cent, 1865, 1873, 1938, 1942; 10 cents 1894, 1943 I particularly enjoy the design of the large cents.
They're plentiful and cheap, but I've rarely seen one raw that didn't look over dipped and/or harshly cleaned. And the nicer graded ones are premium priced.
I didn't have time to take good pictures but this gives you an idea of what I have. I used to have more but I thinned out the collection a bit.
The mintages for most Newfoundland is usually miniscule. The problem is that there are probably only maybe 100 or less really earnest collectors. For that reason, prices for almost any Newf coin are usually quite low unless higher grade. It's a good time to collect every coin in all the denominations.
This is a really nice collection, and I imagine it took a great deal of time to find all of the coins, and organize them so nicely. Bill in Burl: Didn't know about the small number of collectors. If they are all passionate and knowledgeable, I'd think it's enough for some good research and information, and perhaps, just perhaps, one might reasonably hope that the number of collectors might increase, creating more of a market. I have noticed that there are some higher-grade coins that have made their way into PCGS holders. Perhaps there are registry sets?
I haven't done an archive search, but there was a nice book/report out on the Newf coins from someone who specializes in them. There's also a Newf site/club as well, if I remember right. I pulled the "100" number from behind. I'm sure that there are more, especially since the Newf posts picked up steam.
I've heard it said that no one collects Newfoundland but when I've sold they sold quickly and got pretty good prices.
I went to my LCS today and they had a huge bag of silver Newfoundland coins. I tried to buy a bunch and was hoping they'd charge me based on silver value but instead he looked them up and I felt he was too high on most of them so I only got a few. Here's a picture of the bag. Must have been over a hundred.
