I’ve had this for about 25 years as well as the other coins I’ve posted recently. A few more to go then onto other coins. This an an 1884-CC Morgan Dollar grade as a MS-64 by PCGS. I think it would have graded a 65 if not for that scrape in the field in front of Liberty’s face. Super nice reverse and there are a number of nice die cracks on this coin, on both sides.
Something magical about that Carson City mintmark. Puts my mind right back into an old west saloon. Very cool buck.
Living in Montana I had the pleasure of fishing in one of the best areas in the state. I would cud drive past an intersection that only had 1 building. It hadn’t been used in 50 plus years and that was about 30-33 years ago. It was an old saloon. Dust and cobwebs so thick is was hard to see in the building. It was still set up with tables, chairs, spittoons and a mirror behind the bar. Really neat to see. The sign was still up outside but the paint was almost worn off.
A 65 reverse to be sure, but honestly, believe fortunate to grade overall 64...the obverse is just 63 to me. Still, a beauty CC.
I was telling another member that when I lived in TN one of my friends lives in a home that the top soldiers stayed so it was not destroyed. She said there is a kitchen under ground. I told her girl I would be digging lol. I was not into coins then but I told her I’m bringing a medal detector next visit. No telling what’s down there or on the property itself. Hey we can all have a coin hunt! Lol! The property is a lot of acreage. Lol. Not sure she would agree.
There is a saloon near exit 18 on the west side of the state, just off of I-90. It used to be called the 10,000 Silver Dollar Saloon. The name was changed to 50,000 and they have close to 69,000 now. It’s a tourist trap for sure but it’s still in operation today. They even have 2 old geysers sitting at a table. Western dummies for sure. Sit down and have your photo taken with them. They don’t move, ever. Lol
I don’t think 65 was in the cards. Those marks in the left side obverse fields should hold it to a 64. It is a very nice coin, but definitely shy of 65, as the marks are distracting. PCGS got it right.
Here's my nicest (I know my pictures aren't great - but I've made a lot of progress, thanks for the books and bottle cap tip), yours clearly looks better in my view (and is graded 2 points higher of course), have you thought about submitting to CAC or resubmitting?
