Hi All, What would cause a strike thru? I have an 1840/rev. of 1838 Seated Half (EF-40) with what I've been told is a strike thru on the Obverse (left stars are missing). Is this an error or a damaged and therefore devalued coin?? As always, TIA
If a die has grease or gunk built up on part of it, the strike will be weak on part or all of the coin. The coin is therefore "struck through" some foreign object. There are collectors who collect this stuff, so it can bring a small premium to sometimes a larger one depending upon the severity of it.
