when i got into work today one of my coworkers tells me she had gotten 3 silver dollars yesterday. she asked me if i wanted them. of course i said yes. as she shows them to me i see that they are ASE's. she told me she had got them in a deposit from a local mini mart the day before. i explained to her that they were actually silver bullion and not silver dollars. i am assuming someone at this mini mart used them to buy stuff. she then tells me that they would be $3 so needless to say i snagged them up. i also explained to her that they were worth much more than one dollar a piece. she didnt really care as she isnt a collector and that was what we had credited the customers account for them. so for $3 i got 1989, 2003 and a 2004 ASE. sweet deal :thumb:
OMG, you need to go out and buy yourself a lottery ticket. I cant believe you were able to get those for a dollar a piece. Post some pics as soon as you can. BTW, I will be glad to give you $4 for all three coins if you want to make a quick profit
That's fantastic; nice score! Something similar happened to me. My wife's grandmother came over and knowing that I collect coins gave me 2 1986 silver eagles, a 1974 IKE and a 1945 Merc. I explained to her that the silver eagles were worth about $20 each, she stared at me, and said but it says it's worth a dollar...I tried to explain that it's 1oz silver, and she kept going back to it was only a buck :goof: So I accepted them and thanked her for thinking of me. -LTB
I almost forgot about this story. My son found the motherload. A few years back, my boy Eric and his buddy Lalo spent the summer hustling up jobs for party money. Lalo's uncle had recently bought a junkyard that had been around for who knows how long. The uncle wanted to move the car-crusher from one end of the yard to the other. He hired Eric and Lalo for the day to help, paying them both $150. That night Eric came home carrying a coffee can completely filled with change. Almost every coin was bent in some way. He explained to me that when the crane lifted the car smasher, there were piles and piles of bent change that had fallen to the ground under the smasher as the cars were being smashed. This was his and Lalo's share of what was found. He also said they didn't bother picking up the pennys, but he said there were thousands. We spent the rest of the night counting the change. There was over $800.00 in bent change. Included was thirteen dollars face value silver coins, mostly dimes and quarters. There was one Morgan dollar that was bent completely bent in half. I have a quarter and a dime somewhere. I will post a pic when I find them. The boys took the coins to the local coin dealer. He bought the silver outright and gave them fifty cents on the dollar for the bent stuff. They walked out of the store with 200 bucks each free money, plus the $150 they got paid that day for helping the uncle. $350.00 for a day's work. Not bad. Oh, I forgot. They also found three rings and a rusted pistol. They threw the pistol into the weeds.
nice pick up! Regardless of condition you got yourself 3 ounces of silver for 3 bucks and i think silver closed at 17.01 an ounce today :thumb:
That is pretty cool! I want to know more about the pistol, would have been cool if it was an older one, but hey can't ask for everything... Once again very cool story, thanks for sharing! WOW! I didn't expect these to be that circulated! These have been circulating quite a bit, they've been around the block, man! I'm surprised nobody got em' and kept em' before you did! Congrats
Wow, even though they are circulated, they still ar reaaly good looking coins. I still cant get over you got 3 ounces of silver for 3 bucks. Congrats again BTW, you never said if you wanted to take me up on my offer or not. LOL
Amazing Urban... simply amazing! I hope someone wasn't robbed and these were spent by some clueless thief or that someone was so hard pressed for cash they needed to use these at face value to buy something. And your coworker... well, what a star to think of you first, but, man! they really need to understand what they had in hand, being a collector here doesn't matter. Congrats on your luck getting these! Urban: In the reverse pic of the last image posted, the 2004 reverse, there seems to be a Santa Claus face??? is that on the coin?
I didnt notice that until you said something about ti. Your right, it does look like a image of santa on the reverse. Maybe it is a reflection of the person taking the picture. Urban, are you wearing a santa outfit?
Yeah, I suspect there was some genius out there who sold this with a santa sticker on one side, then someone pulled it off and tried to use these as coin dollars. Not sure if these are ASEs or some other coins: not santa, but expresses the concept:
