I went out of my comfort zone with this one, Last day of the Denver Coin Expo. As always, the slab is the determining factor.
I'll guess G4?? Also, this is a Variety coin. Notice how the star at noon points to the "S" instead of the "E" in STATES. The missing section of the C (in Cents), S( in Cents also), the D in United and finally the first S in States makes it a FS-904 . Top 20: Reverse of 1868 Varieties (shieldnickels.net)
First let address the variety....if you look at the items I have marked in red, you'll notice some pups. These broken letters as well C D S S this makes this an FS# 5c-002.97 variety 4 Estamated mintages for #4 ( 464,000 ). About 16 % of the total mintage. It also the reverse of 68 that's is determined by the star under "of". Rev. Hub ll b notice it has all its points. Rev. Hub llA the star's tip is broken or imcomplete. I didnt mark the broken c in cents. Another pup.So its an reverse of 68 the rarer than varity 1&2. Grade a nice circ cam F 12 nice choice for the variety as well eye appeal.
Notice the line under the o also known as the "annulet" that maybe an ddo a lesser one but just maybe .there are more varieties not known on shield than known.... meaning these are a blast to pick.
I think about vf20, don't know much about grading these so Photograde is my friend. Love the CirCam look (paging LordM!). Paddy I am in awe of your attribution skills.
Thank you I'm not always right, so please feel free to recheck the attribution....but I enjoy doing it....and willing to help anyone if asked...hey sometimes I dont wait to be asked.. lol
Sorry folks yesterday was an all day event. Giving this one a bump. This one is also labeled as a shattered die on COC. SHD-5c-1868-01
You have it right. The label has this one wrong. It says it is a FS906. Do you have an online reference for 906?
I completely forgot the CPG. They got this one completely wrong. A 906 is the first progression from 905, the C looks like it was re engraved.
I see the crack but from I'm seeing it doesn't look like a shattered die. I see from the image is a bisecting die crack....can't wait to see what slab....knowing the op its a soap bar.
Phil, Do me a solid and look under the 6 in the denticals...the coin is to dark to make out certain areas. Call me crazy...it may also be a FS-05-1868-313 [003.6]
My white whale shield nickel variety is an 1876 bleeder! This one is highly sought after prize. The engraver must of slipped several times crossing the horizonal lines with the vertical ones....see image.
Nope the only thing there is a die crack. Here is the reference for SHD-5c-1868-01 It's about halfway down the page. http://cuds-on-coins.com/shattered-dies-on-u-s-nickels/
