Got This In Change

It normally takes time to get these in my area so I was surprised when I received two in change. I’m not impressed but I’ll keep them.

Not impressed either. That hair draws attention right off the bat. Thought I had an error coin or strike thru the first one I got in change.

 

I still think this design should have been chosen in 1932 instead of the one we got.

 

Ya know, the more I see of that Washington design, the less I like it. Now, I'm beginning to really dislike it. Like the reverse though.

 

I'm happy that a Maya Angelou quarter exists and I'm glad that the mint resurrected the Fraser design, but for some reason finally seeing pictures of the actual thing feels a little underwhelming.

I'm not sure how to describe it exactly, but all modern US coins have a sort of dull clunkiness to them that has grown gradually over the past 20 years. Whatever happened makes them all seem a little sterile when in hand. Though I rarely see pocket change these days, on the rare occasions I do it doesn't hit me like it used to.

A few of the ATB quarters looked really nice, but they still had that ineffable staleness to them that I can't put my finger on. Is it the metal now being used? Cheaper production techniques? Is it just me? Have I spent too much time looking at classic coins struck in silver and gold and my standards have just risen too high?

I think the sterile feel comes from the CAD technology used to design these days. It’s the same reason modern music all sounds sterile. It’s the digital footprint of the 21st century.

 

The coins of our modern era do not sing out the way the coins of our founding fathers once handled. Today’s coins are dead and live less. The coins of our fathers were majestic.
