So, if you just want to sell your pennies, dimes, nickels and quarter errors you find in circulation, (mostly pennies) what should you concentrate on? Besides the copper 1982 D small date, 1983 D and 1989 D. Good grades would only be the present and few years back. I found a lot of older RPM's on pennies from 1959 - 70's so far. If that is the most common error, it probably doesn't pay much, right?
Most minor errors aren't worth a lot and the odds of finding a major error is remote. If your sole purpose is to make money there are easier ways. Most search only for their collection because they enjoy them.
I'd like to personally welcome you to the "Ten Million Dreamers Club." As long as you are persistent and look at tens of thousands of cents you just might find something that you can sell and buy a bag of groceries. I can say with certainty that 99.9% of the club members only have the joy of the search to go with their collection of neat little oddities that everyone else in the club finds. Coin collecting is a fun pastime and definitely not a path to prosperity. Good Luck.
I collect strictly for the fun and enjoyment of it. Yes I do sell a few coins in my antique shop but I receive no pleasure selling my extras but I do use that money to buy more of what I collect.
You could almost certainly make more money picking up aluminum cans and selling them for scrap. Or if you can pick up an hour of overtime a week, you would be way ahead of the game. That being said, you could look for some of the wide and close AM varieties, some of them show up occasionally.
I'm a buyer not a seller. If I were to sell, I have a trusted numismatist in our community That would give me solid advice on what to expect. His first question would be, why? Good luck!
As many have said, I also collect for the enjoyment of the hobby. I find CRH'ing to be very relaxing and enjoyable, with the added bonus of being on the hunt for any errors or varieties I may not have. I will also use keep repeats of certain coins if I want another for the collection. To answer your question, pennies probably have the highest potential for high value finds. Now, I am not saying you are guaranteed to find a $100 coin in pennies (odds are against you), as the other denominations also have potential. In my experience though, I have had the best luck with pennies. You also need to know what you are looking for and looking at, as only having a handful of coins to search for will do you no good.
Thank you all so much! I call it "hunting for treasure" and the hunt sure is fun! There is always hope. Just like this 1983 D cent I found with an upside down D over D. So far I haven't found another one online yet. Peace!
These are the only two attributed, neither is an upside down D over D http://varietyvista.com/02b LC RPMs Vol 2/RPMs 1983D.htm
HaHa! Funny. I know it could never pay like a regular job but I don't need much to get by. You would be surprised how little too. Don't ask. Just need a little extra. You guys are something!
Thats what I used to say every time I went to Vegas. At least you can’t go broke, you just waste time.
