Haven't been participating in auctions much as of late, but I stumbled across this one on Biddr, and - wow! https://www.biddr.com/auctions/rapp/browse?a=2446&l=2700824 I *knew* I wouldn't win, but I had to shoot my shot. Any guesses what the final hammer was?
I guess someone wanted to consign a collection to sell in one fell swoop. You have to wonder what it would have brought had the nicer coins been properly photographed and sold as individual lots and the less expensive coins been put into group lots of 6-8 coins. I don't think Rapp did the best job at getting the best price for the consignor.
Unless I'm sorely mistaken, I think that the auction did very well for the consignor. I see: - A Philetaros tet worth maybe $800-1200 (possibly two?) - A new style Athens worth maybe $500 - An assortment of more common tets worth maybe $200-400 each - Corinth stater worth maybe $400 - Several other Greek silvers worth perhaps $50-300 each - An Augustus cistophor worth maybe $500-750 - A couple other early Augustus denarii - An assortment of other denarii worth probably $20-75 each - An assortment of low quality bronzes The lot is definitely worth $10k wholesale. $17k (or really $21k after BP, or even more if the 7% VAT applies) is approaching retail value for the lot.
Indeed, unless I'm missing something, selling the collection as a lot brought the consignor considerably more than the coins would have sold individually. A strange market these days, to say the least!
