If one's gotta worry about makin' a profit, one's ain't havin' any fun. How's that for ruining the kings English?
I just collect what interest's me at the time. Errors and Varieties have caught my interest the last couple of years. It gets into the minting process and how they came about. And after a couple years of very intensive study of various errors and varieties compared to some out there I am still a rookie. I do sell a few coins from time to time for friends. But I have never had so much fun in coin collecting as when it was decided that entire collection was going to my son or grand kids. (When my son decides to give me some) That took out of the equation what I could sell a coin for when deciding what I wanted to collect. Now I am like a kid in a candy store. I am completely enjoying the study of whatever error or varieties catch my eye. Just back to having fun like when I was a kid collecting. Stewart
Exactly why I became a type collector, most of the time I dont even look at the key dates instead the most common ones. You can then focus solely on Denomination, Type, and Condition. :high5: Fellow
I search penny rolls purely for the thrill of the hunt. I'm mainly after the wheaties, and anything with an S mint mark in reasonable condition.
I think there is no right or wrong way to collect coins. The best way is to collect what you can afford and enjoy most. I read a magazine article a while back that scolded people for collecting certain ways, and to get rid of certain things. I don't think there is a standard for collecting, or a better way that works for everyone! I like to just go through my collection sometimes, and find the things I forgot I owned.
