Hi It is true that BCW brand likes to lie about what their plastic actually is? I have read some comments but there is not much about it. From them I have bought bags to protect books, and flexible and hard pockets to store paper money. If so, what brands do you recommend using?
That's strange you bring this up. I've always ordered my supplies online through legitimate sources but never checked out the brand name. I just always check if they're safe for coins. I'm such a Novice currency collector. I'm sure some of you are suspect in ordering supplies and not paid to much attention also??
I hope not, but I have been buying Lighthouse Intercept (anti-corrosion) products and SAFLIPS, mostly from Wizard Coin Supply - sometimes from them through Amazon for free shipping with Prime, and sometimes through eBay for a better price than on their own website, but usually direct. I have picked up the advice on those products here. I also am curious if other brands, like BCW are decent.
I've used BCW for postcard sleeves (2 handy sizes). Wizard for coin flips. Lindner for banknotes (they promise acid and chemical softener free). Still looking for a better solution for banknotes re size/quality
One of the people I've read mentioning this is here: I also found it very strange, that's why I had to make this thread, I hope that someone knows something about it that they can comment on more clearly. I also hope the same. Thanks for mentioning what you do and what you have read in this forum. I also hope that someone can have the experience to explain about the other brands. Thank you very much for the recommendation! Thanks for the recommendation. I also hope that there is more information about something safe and honest for bank notes. Thank you. I had planned to do the same but with the things I've read it gave me a lot of doubt.
I'm in the process of moving. These are packed but this is my stack of BCW document holders. I watched ebay continuously for a while and got all these for documents. I like to collect a lot of stampless folded letters for the letters inside as opposed to the postmark. I've gotten some really nice letters for really cheap. They have been stored folder many years. I open them and put them in these holders. I have revolutionary War documents in these and they've been in them a few years now. Here are a couple for example. Nothing has changed with the paper over the years I've had them.
I use various companies including BCW. I look for security, composition, and safety. I have had some of my coins and currency housed in them for as long as two decades or more, so far so good. Your post made me curious so I'm going to do an update of my more important collectables, thank you.
I think you need to distinguish between the actual manufacture of the products, verses the seller. Many companies sell products that they themselves, haven't tested, so they are taking the manufacturers word for it. They may order large amounts and sell it under their brand name, but not actually produce the items. I've used coin and currency products that I've purchased from BCW, and not had any complaints.
I've used BCW Brand 2" x 2" Double Pocket Vinyl Flips and Clear Pocket Pages for coin storage for years--I live in South Florida--and have not had any issue with the material sticking to the coin--even proofs--where it did not release easily from surface tension, or left any residue or haze. When I do submit to the TPGs, however, I send the coins in 2.5" square Saflips which are made of Mylar.
@Vertigo very nice examples of Revolutionary War Documents. Would you agree that many of these documents written during this time period using Quills, and up through the Civil War and beyond using Nib Pens, generally exemplify neat penmanship.
I thought it was something that many knew something about the subject or it was just a rumor. The PVC has not damaged them? So the PVC hasn't damaged them?
No. I've had one of those about 4 years. I also have another signature from the same period. 4 years no problem.
I just stay with Saflip mylar and get pages that hold photo slides that are 100% inert. BCW always felt weird to me, it's on the cheaper end but I'm sure the newer stuff is fine.
I ran out of 2x2 flips that I normally purchase from Amos and ended up with a box of BCW flips NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN will I use them. After placing about 25+ coins in their flips, I put them in my coin box and into the safe. I purchased a mans collection of Indian head pennies and when I retrieved the box of coins that I had put in the safe 2 days earlier and EVERYONE of the flips were OPEN, they were self sealing flips and the glue released. I had to wait for my order from Amos to arrive to correct the mess made by BCW. I sent a letter to BCW shortly afterward and to this day I have received not a word from them in the form of explanation. Just my 2cents worth. Phil
