hello i just made a thread about a 1960 small date and someone helped me i was wrong.as soon as he told me the one is higher than the 9 i ran to my collection and grabbed this 1960 d the 0ne is a lot higher than the 9!also the words liberty is all doubled!!!!!also the penny not shown well in photo is a shiny high gloss color and lincoln is toned light blue.photo doest show but it is there under certain angles. All, or most 1960-D SMDT's have this type doubling. A 60-D SMDT is not anymore valuble than LGDT - it's the 1960-P SMDT's and SMDT proofs that carry added value
i will take a better pic be back one minute the date and liberty are doubled liberty is doubled very bad the b hangs clear below the other letters
i think its a circulated proof coin.the finish is shiny and lincoln under the right angles is toned greyish blue but i cant capture it on my camera?it looks like a circulated proof small date according to pics i have compared.the finish is just to shiny and only lincoln is toned blue mettalic greyish color
View attachment untitled.bmp you can see the cast a little on this pic better lincoln is a different tone like the proof but in person it is a lot more visible
Jesse, It's hard for me to tell as I can't enlarge the image, but it looks like there is a die chip inside the upper "B" of LIBERTY-if so, then I doubt it's a proof as a proof die would probably not have lasted long enough to develop such a chip. The only example of a doubled die for the small date '60-D that I know of also has an RPM associated with it. Do you see what looks like a faint outline of a "D" above the regular mint-mark?
also i think the coin might have been stuck in grease!on the fron and reverse there are traces of it all over
yes there is.i just looked it over there is a faint d with a strong d on top and a little above also in god we trust is doubled .looking at machined 1960 small dates mine is a little different.the letters and numbers look as if they are there twice.not smuged like machine doubling.i do know the finish is very gold like and lincoln is like a bluish grey color and he is the only thing on the penny that color.
Should look like this(also note doubling on the date)- http://img.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/1960D-1MM-100.jpg
also on the b in liberty there is no chip.it is doubled then filled at the top and the d does not have a faint d like in your pic.it is almost ontop of itself and the doubling doesnt look like that pic either it is like its overlaying everything twice not little chunks on the letters here and there?
if its not a proof coin then it has the shiniest copper tone to it i ever seen.when you turn the coin up and down side to side you can see the gloss and lincoln changing colors i just cant get it on my pics?o also the i in liberty look closley it is doubled and very visible like the very visable b and e
If the upper part of the B is filled, that is what I was referring to as a chip. The part of the die that would normally cause the upper loop of the B to be hollow has gotten chipped off which caused the filled B. This is certainly not impossible with a proof die, but I would imagine it would be highly improbable and a rare occurence. Those proof dies just don't produce enough strikes for that kind of wear. These filled letters and numbers type of errors were very common though on business strikes for this series.
Duh!!:goofer: Don't you love it when you get so involved in the details that you overlook the obvious!
