That’s wonderful and what a great story, a fond memory for sure.

That’s the main reason but as we both know, three of these coins are $100.00 and up in price and that’s for conditions worse than this set.

All of my circulation grade sets are as found. I got them in change, from the pocket of a relative, from a trade with a friend or from searching in banks and local stores and businesses. I will not upgrade any of these sets.

Sweet set, Dave!! I had that very same Whitman folder when I was a kid. The cardboard disk they stuck in the 1913 hole set me off on my very first numismatic quest for knowledge. I saved my quarters and bought a bus ticket to the library so I could read up on why that 1913 was so rare…… Thanks for the memory!

Great times Randy. We only had news about coins if we went searching for it. There weren't any sources for young collectors. I remember most established collectors had sources but they kept them to themselves. The bookstore and the library was it.

Yes a lot from dad, mom and change. I bug my husband to make sure if he spots anything at his work to get for me. I don’t bug him too much lol. Many from my dad and mom I’m saving for my son.

Good work, @Collecting Nut. I'm happy for you; it's always nice to see someone that has accomplished a task such as this. It's not the grade of the coins that really counts; it's the satisfaction of completing the set.

I had a nearly identical experience with that same Whitman folder. When I was but a wee lad, a local vacuum shop had a coin store in the back from which I bought numerous Liberty Nickels and I almost filled the album (I don't think I ever found an 1885 or a 1912-S, but I did have the 1912-D). That "Rare" plug in the 1913 hole lit up something ineffable inside of me and I found myself buying price guides and coin magazines to learn more. I soon discovered what "Rare" and "5 only" really meant - it meant paying a number of dollars larger than I could either count or conceive of at the time.

I sometimes wonder if Whitman conceived of that "Rare" plug as a PR opportunity and put it there to attract and keep attention to the hobby. If so, it definitely worked on me.

I feel the same way. Some of my set are low grade, some high grade and some are in between.

Thanks Randy, not sure where I got the folder but it’s older than I am. Lol It was nice to find that last Nickel, especially in the grade of the test of the set and as an added bonus, the lamination errors.

Some sets are high grade g C pins and others low. I wanted this series in low grade as it looks like they worked for a living, which they did.

At this point my only question is, which of my near completed sets to I complete? I have a number of them but it’s tough to decide as I want to complete them all. What a Dilemma. Lol

Well if it makes you feel any better, you are way ahead and close to many of your goals of collecting which hey that is more than some can say, especially me. Congrats to you. That’s a good feeling no doubt!
