2010 President Fillmore P and D mint dollar. D mint lettering upside down when obverse is facing up.

Pam I believe the edge lettering is added before the coin is struck.

Sorry my friend but I must set the record straight.

RIGHT SIDE UP vs. UPSIDE DOWN EDGE LETTERING

For business strikes, the edge lettering is being applied in a seperate process after the obverse and reverse are struck. The struck coins are run through the edge lettering machine at a high speed without reguard to whether they are facing obverse up or reverse up. Therefore, coins are being struck with "edge lettering right-side-up" and "edge lettering upside-down" in relation to the obverse of the coin (SEE PHOTOS BELOW). "Upside down" lettering IS NOT AN ERROR. However, it is a nice variation to collect one of each type if one is inclined to do so.

The edge lettering on proof coins is applied by a different process than on business strikes. It is applied when the coin is struck.

    Thanks for that.
Either way the edge lettering is done separate from the striking process.

I was not posting as an error this is why it’s on this thread. I was just tickled I had both.
But thanks again. I do realize it’s a separate process and two separate states. I sure hope you all do not look at me as a dumb broad! I should know more yes, being in banking handling money but much of that was cash. Thanks again.:smuggrin::smuggrin:

Many folks think a post is a question or a position that they may be able to challenge. Don't let it discourage you, they are trying to help. If you are interested in the positions, you should set out to collect them.

Yes, I need to explain it clearer. I thank you. I guess I look at saying “ look how cool” is not really the proper pronunciation for collecting etiquette. I’m still all over the place. Place my items in albums but still have so much to look through. Thanks again.

Ha ha! I’m pretty sharp once I do learn but I admit this is a lot of detailed learning. Gosh to think the coins I may have had my hands on in the day.

My wife's fingers take that shape when she is indicating I am a Loser, when I assume what she is saying is not what she is saying.

    Womanspeak is fun.

The ones missing edge lettering entirely is an interesting story about nefarious activity at the mint. Unfortunately it's impossible to tell the stolen ones from the true accidents.

Yes I had read about the missing edge lettering when I looked at my other President dollar coins again especially George Washington’s and Sacagawea Dollar. Thank you.
