I defer to Paddy as he is the expert….. When I see an anomaly like yours, the first thing that I do is rationalize in my mind how could this possibly have occurred at the mint…. So the only possibility that comes to me is the cent planchet went into a dime die and that isn’t possible because it has old Abe’s portrait…. So the only reasonable rationale is that it was tampered with outside of the mint.
Yes makes sense. I honestly Need to read more on the process rather than errors or damage. Some people just intentionally destroy something as simple as a cent, too much time on their hands. Thank you!
Doesn’t take much to damage a soft zinc cent. Copper plating is very thin Could have had a dime jammed against it in a cash drawer or ? We’ll never know exactly
I wouldn't rule out it could have been in a holder for a spell given that attenuation through the edge.
I've seen this before. Mr. Abe was so in love with Miss Mercury that he wanted to be more like her, so they got together, I mean really got together, and the reeding is the results. LOL
