That’s separation of the plating. These cents can’t take the strike sometimes without peeling apart like that.
@Kang131 …Welcome to Coin Talk!…we members don’t know your level of numismatic expertise, but go here: doubleddie.com …and read all the sections there, especially “Worthless Doubling”. It explains split plate doubling and much, much more…if you already know about the website then don’t pay this old fart any mind. Also…posting pictures of coins from computer screens doesn’t yield very good results most times. Figure out how to post the pics you take from the file source or get a USB microscope with the proper software. Even phone cams take better pics than screenshots…there’s a whole list of reasons not to use screenshots, like scan lines and pixelation to name 2, but you get the idea…imo…Spark
@Spark1951 Hi, thank you for the kind words and sense of humility. I will definitly check out the site and do my homework as I am somewhat young in age, at least in terms of my coin knowledge. I had taken few years off after my family stole my entire collection upwards of 3k coins. I am back now and try as I might I intend to keep a very low profile. I did dig out some "gems" I will post today, in terms of pics I was taking a picture of the screen on my microscope I now realize how bad they are so thank you for pointing that out its a simple fix of moving the memory card over. Thank you again Spark I look forward to posting and growing with your input best regards JLS
@Kang131 …there are many experts here on CT who are much more knowledgeable in many areas than I am. Members can search CT by keyword to find previous posts for information. It can get tedious but you will only get accurate info here, that’s how we roll. Click on a members name/handle in their avatar and navigate to the entire list of what they have posted. Some members to mention worth a search: @lordmarcovan @paddyman98 @desertgem @furryfrog02 @Randy Abercrombie @Kentucky and @Collecting Nut just to name a few. My apologies to those members not shown who deserve mentioning. You can find coin info on Youtube, but since the site is click-driven for profit, most info is sensationalized, inaccurate or does not give a full context of the subject by omission, so be wary. Same for Etsy, and eBay has degenerated as a viable medium, just so you know.
Thanks for the shout out @Spark1951 . Not sure I qualify to be in the presence of such experts but I will take the kudos I agree with the others who said that OP's coin is split plate doubling. Keep looking @Kang131 , there are still some cool coins out there to be found in circulation. Looking forward to seeing what you find in the future!
