1916 was a fun year for US coinage.

Lots of changes were made in 1916 and some interesting varieties. Please post any US 1916 coins.

Cent. Last year for the Matte Proofs. About $5,000 in PR-65. No proofs were made again until 1936.

Nickel. The doubled die obverse coin has become really rare. About $40,000 in AU.

Dime. Both Barber and Mercury were minted. The 1916-D Mercury is probably $10,000 in AU.

Quarter. Both Barber and Standing Liberty were minted. The Standing Liberty is $10,000+ in AU.

Half. First year for the Walking Liberty. One of my favorite designs.

The hubs were re-worked in 1915 for the Lincoln Wheat which produced, imo, the sharpest business strikes for the whole series in 1916.

My favorite that I have shown many times:

Nice, but must ask strictly from curiosity on the 1916-D half photos: Are these photos of mis-matched coins...not the obv/rev of same coin...? The D is on the obv but there's an S on the reverse...or it sure looks to be an S. Again, just wondering. Thx.

One interesting tidbit is that collector interest in proof sets dropped so much that 1916 saw no proof Barber dimes or quarters minted.

Not an S...just a carbon spot. You're right, though, it does almost look like an S.
