C. Naevius Balbus Ar Denarius 80 BC. Obv Head of Venus right diademed Rv. Victory driving triga right. Crawford 382/1a RBW 1409 3.88 grms 18mm Photo by W. Hansen This coin is noteworthy in that the die is not numbered but is denoted by the letter E which can be seen just below the chin of Venus. The S.C. indicates that this coin was a special issue authorized by the senate and probably using bullion from the state reserves. Most likely this coinage was needed as a response to the Sertorian War 80-72 BC which was mostly fought in Spain.
It feels kinda mandatory to have a coin with the name Appius Claudius. I always liked the Roma portrait on this issue. Congrats @ominus1 !
I find interest in the way this series handles the dots between the names and the 'handwriting differences that make some ligates more obvious than others.
