APPIUS CLAUDIUS PULCHER(+) ..1st 'TRIGA' :D

    C. Naevius Balbus Ar Denarius 80 BC. Obv Head of Venus right diademed Rv. Victory driving triga right. Crawford 382/1a RBW 1409 3.88 grms 18mm Photo by W. Hansen 382-b.jpg This coin is noteworthy in that the die is not numbered but is denoted by the letter E which can be seen just below the chin of Venus. The S.C. indicates that this coin was a special issue authorized by the senate and probably using bullion from the state reserves. Most likely this coinage was needed as a response to the Sertorian War 80-72 BC which was mostly fought in Spain.

    It feels kinda mandatory to have a coin with the name Appius Claudius. I always liked the Roma portrait on this issue. Congrats @ominus1 !

    I find interest in the way this series handles the dots between the names and the 'handwriting differences that make some ligates more obvious than others.

Veiled and turreted bust of Cybele right; K/• behind / Victory driving galloping biga right, holding reins and goad; below, stork standing right. Crawford 322/1a; Sydenham 589; Fabia 15. Good VF, a couple verdigris spots.
