1985 Nickel Jefferson

Hello all! I found this Nickel and it is my first time seeing a coin like this but I do not know what it is. I was hoping you can tell me.

A circulated 5c struck with worn out dies. A keeper! But not valuable.

 

Extremely worn die. It's cool, but as said, not of any value.

 

Agree. Worn die. Good to have you find this so you can get to know the characteristics of worn dies. But it does not make a coin have more value.

 

As noted, a coin struck by VLDS set of dies. Reverse looks to be worse, but both are rather mushy.

 

Do you see those deep lines that look like wrinkles? That's what the dies looked like. They were working overtime when they struck out that coin.

 

Arbie it is an extreme example of die deterioration doubling.
Same type of doubling as the 1963 you posted.

 

It was struck by a worn die and then heavy circulation has made it appear the way it looks today.
