Can someone please de-baffle me? I'd appreciate it! Below from: https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/6062062-001/NGCAncients/
I suspect that it's simply a mistake. "Marks" should presumably be under comments, not under pedigree. Note that on the actual label it isn't classified as a pedigree, but is placed next to the comment regarding edge chips.
Thanks Donna, I suspect you are correct. But even with that, the stand alone word "marks" (separate from the chips comment) baffled me. I do not recall seeing it before on an ancients label. Bankers marks. Counter-marks. Brush marks. Maybe even edge marks (though more likely on a modern coin to denote wheel marks). But just 'marks'? I see obvious surface marks, but they don't seem particularly comment worthy for tets in this grade. Bottom-line: A friend asked me exactly what "marks" referenced on this example and I was unable to give an answer with certainty. After looking and researching I began to wonder if perhaps "marks" was a term with a meaning beyond what I know. (And I'll be the first to admit that there is MUCH beyond the realm of what I know.)
Marks can be a name, of course (a variant spelling of Marx), but the "m" isn't capitalized in this case.
Ok.. So I have a friend who actually works at NGC down in Florida. He does the data entry for each coin. I sent him a message concerning the issue.. His response was the following.. "Could mean bag marks or merchant marks, I'd have to see the coin. They use the pedigree field to just stuff whatever extra info doesn't fit into the other fields because the data base was put together in the 80's LOL"
It's not a pedigree and not a mistake. The NGC online system was set up for US coins. Ancients have just kind of been worked into the existing system. Our second drop down is called "pedigree" in the database, but we use it for descriptions and for other comments. The "comment" line, which is the first choice we use for clipping, scratches etc... is limited to 16 characters, so when there are additional comments, they go into the "pedigree" field in the database and then show up online in that field. The current databse is being overhauled and these sort of things will be remedied with the next version. Concerning the word "marks" it's a generic word we use to describe dings, dents, bumps etc....
