The pictures are a bit blurry, but the chin and the tell tale marks near the rim at 330 make it look like a spikey. Does anyone have an opinion on the grade? Thanks !! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330409585604&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSA:US:1123
Looks to be in the F15 to VF20 range. As for the spiked chin - can't say for sure, but I would expect it to be more obvious. Just my opinion.
Thanks Mark, I looked at it for a long time before I placed the winning bid, I guess I will eventually find out. In any case it looked like a nice original one, and if it is in the f/vf range at least I didn't do too bad. I still think it may very well be the "Spiked Chin" variety.......
I zoomed in real close to the pic and it looks like it looks like a it curls up a bit like the bottom of a j.
The first one is unc, the second is out of my collection. Can you see some of the same similarities? especially the marks arond the 3:30? Maybe Im goin crazy and just looked at it too long......
Love the uncirculated, she had that attached to her chin I wouldnt be hiding under her bed, thats for sure
Yes - between those two spiked chin examples I can see similarites on the rim at 3:30. And yes in the auction I think(being the key word) that I see the some of the same type marks. Still not convinced it is a spiked chin, but I have been wrong before.
No the coin in the auction is NOT one of the spiked chin varieties. It is Cohen-13 the plain 4 stemless wreath variety. The most common of the 1804's
Well, so much for that theory. You can't see diddly squat. It sure does look nice in my own spreadsheet program though. I suppose I could crop it and get a better blow up of the chin, but that wouldn't give a proper comparison to the photo of your coin.
No question...Cohen-8 "Common Spiked Chin". Obverse... 1. High crosslet "4" 2. Bulge in right field near rim at 2:30 3. Die crack across the top of "LIBERTY" 4. Screw thread marks in right field below the bulge Reverse... 1. Close fraction 2. Final "A" almost touches ribbon 3. Right foot missing on "T" in UNITED 4. Vestigial feet on both "T"s in STATES 5. Die crack from rim to "R" in AMERICA 6. "AL" in HALF joins at the base 7. Long spine extends from the tip of the leaf under "T" in UNITED almost to the base of the adjacent "E".
Use photobucket.com to attach large pictures. As it is I can see the spike on yours easily. I do agree the one in question also now looks like a spiked chin.
