I picked this up with little familiarity for late Roman pieces. The seller marked it Valentinian III but looking at examples it doesn’t seem to be him. Then again any I’m having trouble finding anything else from a different emperor that fits. Any help would be greatly appreciated! 12mm 1.6g
I find these late Victory types to be quite difficult. If it's an official mint product, it would be Esty type 55, issued by several different emperors including Valentinian III and Honorius. (Note you've got the reverse upside down. You can see "RIA" from "VICTORIA".) Here's one that may be an official mint product, due to the prominent, well-formed officina letter, "S", on the reverse: I bought it from Warren as Honorius, you can see it on his page linked above. But I'm not sure. I think it could be an imitation. The type was widely imitated, often called "Vandal" due to lots of find locations in North Africa. I would bet yours is one of those, especially if it lacks an officina letter (I can't tell). Your obverse legend appears to be blundered as well. Is this one an imitation? It has an officina letter, but it appears to be malformed. I'm betting imitation. Maybe if I clean the reverse more I'll be able to tell, although the borderline between official and imitation in this territory is pretty foggy!
Here is my questionable LRB. I am just attributing it to Valentinian III because I want to be an optimist
At least it has a clear officina letter! (Though I think I've seen "Vandal" examples with a T in particular.) Even if it's Honorius it's still pretty cool as a very, very late LRB.
Don't you dare even think about crushing my dreams right now...I can't handle it... Also, it was like $10 and an interesting example of a Victory that I didn't have. So not bad.
