Just picked up a very nice 1937 Daniel Boone Half MS 65. As you can see it is dark but the details both obverse and reverse. Second, the old white core holder has issues on the back. Nice having the CAC. Question, should I keep it in the 1987 holder or reholder ? It's a beautiful piece and if I were to reholder could it get a higher grade now ? Thanks for your input.
Best to leave it as is. Old slabs are collectible themselves. If you resubmit you may lose a grade along with the CAC label.
In looking into CAC and what they place as a 'value' on the 1937, they show $233 where the NGC site gives the value as $200. Any ideas as to why ? Curious.
I do not envision any impediment to have NGC coordinate with CAC and I do not think I would re-holder, but as an alternative, request NGC to possibly apply a new hologram/sticker. I would email JA and solicit his opinion. I do know the coordination has been accomplished with a PCGS encapsulation where the original grading sticker was unsightly. I know that if I was going to re-holder, the first avenue I would pursue is cross at same grade via PCGS, and if it will not cross, send back in the existing NGC Holder.
Nice looking coin, today! I think the toning on this coin is what would make up my mind as the toning is certain to flourish and make the coin even darker. If you like it, you're all set, keep it in the same holder.
I do not have the piece in hand, of course, and would not comment on the grade(CAC already has anyway), but could you confirm the piece does not have fingerprints?
I'm with the others, leaving it as is, but for a few reasons not mentioned. The toning may have occurred over time in the holder. It can and does happen, which is why neither NGC or PCGS guarantee a full red designation. Same thing happens with silver and other metals. Second, there appear to be finger prints on the reverse- left side behind Boone and over the date. Like the toning, they may have been overlooked and also developed over time. For this reason I think it would come back an MS64. Just my opinion.
I think the fingerprints showed up after slabbing... I think it would possibly grade lower if resubmitted unless submitted to NCS and then NGC. You will lose the toning and the print may not be removed, but you will be conserving the coin to possibly prevent further long-term damage. And just maybe it will grade the same or better. Toning can hide great luster. This is the path I would probably take. The current toning does nothing for me. It looks like a good strike.
I wholeheartedly agree with the consensus here. Leave it in its current holder. I think you could be opening a Pandora's Box trying to get it regraded.
