We found two in a roll once. I'll never forget, because the roll was short a cent, but had a clad dime in its place. So a $0.59 roll, face value.
I got 15 IHC in the ‘60s, from circulation…60 years ago…I’ve already split these between my sons who own them now. BUT…I am working on a cup of coins, mostly cents, the newest cent date is 1983. The oldest from the cup was a IHC, 1902. Unfortunately, it was heavily pitted and almost black with corrosion. I tried soaks in distilled water and acetone and got some of the corrosion off, but it is too far gone.
In the early to mid 50's I was telling a friend of my mother about wanting to find an IHC. He laughed and said he found them in circulation all the time. I offered him a nickel for every one he got for me. Months later, checking with him, he was amazed that he hadn't found any!!!
The tellers at the banks knew me and would alert me when things came in and hold them for me. They would call me if I did not stop by.
Yeah, the good old days. I can't even get my bank to order Ike Dollars anymore. They used to get me bags of 100 whenever I wanted, those days are gone
I have my dad’s collection of Indian Head Cents. As a kid in the 1920s he would get penny rolls from the bank and pull the IHCs. I probably have over 300 of them. As a kid I did the same with 1943 steel cents. I have several hundred.
I have found one IHC in circulation but the other one I found was kind of funny. I was out duck hunting about 15 years ago and had to pull over next to a local lake to take care of some business. I got out of the truck and while standing there next to my truck I looked down and noticed a cent sized coin laying on the gravel. When I finished doing what I stopped for, I picked up the coin, walked down to the lake shore to wash it off a bit and determine what it was. It was an 1859 IHC...just laying there on the surface although in pretty tough shape.
