Unfortunately I have noticed some animosities between some folks from both countries. I have no problem with Canada or Canadians. I teamed up with a bunch on several work-related projects abroad. (Canadian ex-pats are some of the funnest people to party with!) I once came very close to buying a summer vacation home in Annapolis Royal (Nova Scotia).
I haven't read the offending thread. Just wanted to say I love Canada. It is spectacular, I've been to 4 provinces. Hopefully Alberta is next. As for the Canadian money. I just found a load of it in my father's collection today. He sure did like the Canadian and Mexican coins. And I'm making a musical arrangement of O Canada. So how's that for a Canadian vortex for me!
Snaz, I am from Texas and know a "Bubba" when I see one. You just heard from all of the Bubba members on CT from the other thread. I could go on an on about how this effects our image throughout the world, but I will not. Suffice to say, you took the high ground. Well done.
Sorry to hear there was a problem. I guess I missed those threads. I've started my coin collecting life with Canadian large cents in 1954. Love Canadian coins and Canada the country. :thumb:
I dont think you owe anyone any apolagies. I read the entire thread and I too have a passion for my country. I think that is part of the problem with some people taking such a great country (both America and Canada) for grantes. I would have been offended and probably done the same thing if I felt someone was bad mouthing the country I love and the country that has done so much for me and my family. It is refreshing to see someone with passion for there country. You dont see that much anymore.
("I'd never want to leave my country to go on a vacation, or live anywhere else") T $ you were one of the first people I met in this forum.....and this is not a put down....but being I'm old enough to be your grand daddy I tell you now this ...you should see other countries you should learn first hand how others live . I think of you T $ as being a smart young man... but book smart and street smart are two different things. You think you love your country now????? If you walked some of the streets I have..... you be happy a pig in mud living in a card board box on any street in this country! We are blessed.... and I'll leave you with this...." I was sad because I had no shoes.... until I saw a man without his feet!" We are blessed all North Americans !
Well said Shawn. there are many many of us down here that admire and collect your country's coins and currency. It is on the same level of design IMO as my country's money, USA. Don't let that thread tie you up. The frustration some of us have is that our banks do not want to have anything to do with converting your money even though with small change the difference is very little. So ,like me, Lincoln Memorial cent collector, we have accumlated a lot of Canadian cents and silver coins that it seems we're almost stuck with. If only there were a coin changer to put our Canadian coins into --- that would be great. I'm debating collecting them. The King Georgesand the Queen Elizabeths are neat and very interesting. zeke
Takes a big man to step up and apologize. Canada is a great place to visit. Used to go there frequently when I was younger...played in many many hockey tourneys. Quebec City is a GREAT place to be during the Bon Homme festival, Montreal is just great (though, since 'The Olde Munich' has been closed, it's a bit calmer). Drummondville, Montreal, Quebec City all hold special places in my heart (ah, the youthful memories!).
Awesome man, glad you still have that 22 no D, did you ever hear the story how I got it? I got it cheap, you got it cheap, we were both happy. Looking forward to your call on the Cents set Well thankyou, I feel perhaps this was something the whole forum needed to get out?? Perhaps everyone is just humoring the discussion, but I certainly can feel a lot of angst leaving the forum. I apolagized because regardless if I was wrong or not, someone somewhere felt offended, I'm sure of it. So an apology was needed. And you're right, passion for someones home country is definitely something that seems to lack the last little while. It has been boosted a bit around here because of the Olympics. Yeah, I understand, I just think it's petty on accepting Canadian coinage down there. It's not banana republic coinage which is worth a fraction of both Canadian and American coinage. (FWIW I do have a collection of said coins) Well thankyou, and I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. I have never been farther East than Alberta. I think this post can sum up how I feel. Jokes are good. I can handle jokes, we all can. But as I'm sure some of you know... jokes get old. When the same old joke is tossed around for years and years it loses it's comedic factor and is no longer funny. Sure comments like "funny money" and "Canada, Americas hat", can be fun. But when it goes on for years it loses it's appeal, ESPECIALLY to the person on the receiving end.
IMPO, this thread doesn't belong in Coin Chat anyway. It is a public apology and that doesn't sound like it is about coins to me... Yeah, I'll edit it out, and let the older people play, and I'll look at what they have to say and dream about one day being like them, and loving the United States, because I obviously don't.
IMO the Author of the OP of I hate Canadian Cents! was being completely absurd. Hating coins is pointless for they are inanimate objects and they were only being hated because he didn't wish to realize he was the only one responsible for his situation. It was not the cashiers nor the Canadians coins fault that he didn't know how to check his own money when given to him to make sure it was accurate and if he spent half the energy it took to rant that whole silly OP in checking his change in the first place he wouldn't have needed to get angry, nor rant in this forum. I do feel that your Countries coinage was being disrespected and that you had every right to defend your Countries coinage without apology, but you are a very responsible person for taking the higher road in this. I hope you do not believe that I was offended at your words for I wasn't. I only got angry because it was said that "There are times being American can be a handicap as well" which I having been born an American and have never been anything but proud to be an American can honestly say was a lie said about my country, nor would I ever stand to have anyone tell me that by me being an American could make me Handicapped /or A lesser man than any other man in this World. But it was said as a joke and that Member and I took the time to talk and apologize to each other so I feel all is good on that account as well Also, I primarily collect World Coins and have several Awesome Canadian Coins!!!
I wasn't asking you to delete everything, you spent a long time writing that up, I asked you to erase the political parts.
