If you had a choice between a 1890 PCGS $20 Liberty AU 58 Or a 1904 PCGS MS 62 $20 Gold which would you rather have? Assuming they are the same price and why?

The 1890 for sure much more scarcer date and as a AU58 is very nice.

I would probably like the 1890 more. I don't care for most coins I see in MS62.

Indeed the 1890 in AU58 for same/similar reasons of mintage and MS62 detractions...plus the year of one of my grandmother's birth plus the connection to the 19th century, the "gay 90s", etc. (was such a nice, happy word for the historic period from/in yesteryear...now hi-jacked/commandeered for a totally different meaning). Progress, right...?

I remember a friend asking if I would prefer a 58 or a 63 and I then decided on the 58 as sometimes it is hard to tell weather a 58 is circulated and they are always pretty while a 63 can have a lot of chatter. Put a bean on a 58 and it is a no brainer.

Normally, eye appeal is everything for me. In the situation mentioned, the cost being about equal, definitely the much lower mintage 1890. If one could afford the price, waiting on the 1904 should be a fairly easy undertaking for a better grade (a nice MS63/64) with 6,252,699 struck compared to 75,940.

It's tough to say because to me, eye appeal is everything. I don't care for coins that marked up with ugly bag marks. An AU-58 should not have that many, just a tiny bit of wear, but who knows what you will get these days given grade-flation

An AU-58, properly graded, and an MS-62 are often the same thing. Most MS-62 graded coins are not Mint State.

Mintage would demand I take the 1890.

1890. Most low MS have limited eye appeal to me. A 58 could look 65+ with just that slight touch of rub. 58 all day

The 90, but I'd still like to see the 04.

with a mintage just shy of 76K, I'd definitely go for the 1890. Also, according to the Bowers book on DE's, finding one in a grade over MS62 is expensive and challenging... and we know what 62's usually look like. So an attractive AU58 seems to be the "optimal collecting grade" for the issue.
The '04 mintage was over 6 MILLION (!) and I just don't see spending the same money on one of those in MS62.

No brainer, 1890 (assuming it looks like a 58 should).

1890 cuz there the same type coin but fewer of the 1890. The grades are pretty much the same quality of coin. Plus 20 years from now the 1890 may gain some added value
