Which grading company to use.

I have read numerous post on the subject and still have not come to a definate conclusion on which grading company to use. I know it is up to personal preference but I want to see what everyone thinks to be the best and most respected one.
Also, if you could let me know the process for sending in coins and the relative cost per coin when you send them in. I am not ready to send any yet but I would like to get all my info ready so when it is time, I know were to go.

It's down to only two options : NGC and PCGS. Others ? Forget 'em.

I recommend PCGS.

 

What does it normally cost to get a coin graded at pcgs? Also, what is the rule for sending a coin to be grade. In other words, if the value of the coin is not more graded than what you have in it, do you just not do it?

Since my interest is primarily old Large Cents and neither major grader likes to actually give a grade for old coppers other than detail grade, I find both to be inadequate.

 

PCGS, NGC and ANACS are often considered the top three TPGs. The one to choose often depends on the series. When in doubt, go with PCGS. TC

NGC will give a details grade. The problem is that finding true problem free large cents doing varieties is almost impossible or very very expensive.

To the original post - if you know you have a good solid coin then I would use PCGS. I assume the coins will be worth the grading - but in all honesty if doing Jefferson Nickels then I would use NGC. I personally think for certain coins one is better than another. Not knocking either PCGS or NGC, but when it comes to the older copper I think PCGS is a little better.

I like NGC only because I like their slabs better. Then again, I'm not really a big slab lover.

PCGS is the best IMO. To send them coins you will need to join their Collectors Club. That will cost you $50 a year at the Silver Membership Level. Or you can find someone who can submit for you.

What is your reason to slab?

If it's to sell probably PCGS then NGC
If it's to keep probably NGC then PCGS
But it's up to you really...even to keep anacs would be fine.

 

I've never paid more than $8 per coin. Find a reputable dealer near you who is a member of a grading company of your choosing and they'll usually send it off at their cost, as long as you're a customer.

If you subscribe to NGC at $109 per year you will get a coupon good for 5 coin gradings. This can save you some money right there. It usually cost about $30 to get a coin graded. You will also need to pay for registered return postage and whatever it cost to get the coins there so it does add up substantially. But if you wanna play you gotta pay. I really appreciate all the info. I guess I just have to pick between NGC and PCGS. I appreciate everyone trying to give me some guidance.

The large majority of my collection is slabbed by either NGC or PCGS and I don't spend a dime on grading fees. Simply purchase all of your coins already slabbed and let someone else incur the costs.

In addition, authenticating coins is very difficult, even for advanced collectors. PCGS & NGC guarantee authenticity. As a newer collector, you might want to consider the protection of buying certified coins especially if you are planning to have your raw coins graded in the future. Just my 2 cents!
