Where do you think this 89 CC would grade at?

89 CC is on of the key coins in this set and since it's not graded where is the guarantee of authenticity? If the rest of the coin is in very good condition why is there all that details mess on the face? I would be hesitant to buy a key date coin on EBay (1909S VDB, 16D Merc, 89CC Morgan etc.) that was not graded. It should be in a slab from a reputable grading company stating it is authentic, with a number you can look up on the database to verify the slab and coin are both real.

I would not even consider buying this piece.

The first question, is it genuine? I am not entirely sure. It's made tougher to say because of the polished surfaces.

The other thing that is for sure, it that it's been polished to death. The polishing looks to have occurred after the Ms. Liberty was hit in the face repeatedly with an ice pick. The marks have been rounded by the polishing.

I personally would pass and wait for a nicer example. Not a common date but not rare either.

    Unusual damage.
    Is the coin even authentic?

I can't see buying that coin at any price. Rare date or not, it's just ugly. Without all the damage, maybe AU. I don't know these well enough to be sure it is even real.

I certainly don't like the looks of this coin, either. I'd pass for sure.

Seller is relatively new to eBay, does not allow returns, typical coin to fake...I'd stay away from this one.

Serious polish job...there's a reason that coin is not in a slab

I love Morgans but I would stay away from this one. To me the nicks', bruises, marks, and toning are very questionable. I have a bad feeling about this one!

It won't grade straight for the pitting. Where's the ear on that, anyway? Skip it.

If it's an authentic coin (and that's hard to tell with the polishing of the coin on both sides and pitting on the obverse). and sent in to PCGS or NGC, it'd probably be an AU details (polished) coin, and perhaps get a bid in the $1500 to 1700 range by someone on Ebay. The polishing and pitting really raises authenticity doubts, imo. Walk away from this one ... heartbreaker and pickpocket coin.

It is interesting that of the 5 89CC coins shown on that link, they are all details coins, although they don't explain that details is a bad thing, except 1.
    High Grade Details
    VF Details
    Very Good/ Fine Details
    Fine/VF Details (cleaned)
    Fine Details
The misinformation to someone not completely knowledgeable about coins,
is that the details on these coins are very good, and not that details means
the coins have serious issues. (Except one that says cleaned.) I can understand being a seller and not have to constantly having things returned and dealing with postage and fees and paperwork and all the extra time involved which is being uncompensated for, but for a $1000+ item, you have to accept returns if there is
any problem with your purchase/goods. I used to buy things on EBay and I didn't have too many issues. 1 or 2 minor things, 1 was my fault and the other was the sellers fault, but I haven't bought anything valuable on there for many years and I never will again as they just aren't trustworthy. If I need an item I can't get elsewhere, ($20 etc.) I still use them. But not for coins or baseball cards.
