I noticed that the post-mark was in December of '94 and he claims it was written about in the Fall '94 issue of Coin World. Did they see into the future, or is the magazine always just horribly late with their issues.

There is no real error with the set itself, it is just exactly what he described. A collector ordered a 1994 proof set in late 1994 and when it arrived in Dec he opened it up and found they had sent him a 1995 set. It was written up and pictured in Coin World in 1994 with pictures. They apparently got it postmarked so as to prove that this was the early set. A similar thing happened with the Sac dollars in 1999, one got out mixed in a bag of either quarters or SBA dollar about two weeks before the end of the year. The early released dollar made the papers and was slapped by one of the top grading services with the date of slabbing on the label.

    Thanks Conder and

Yea but he wanted $1000 for that? Seems way high to me. Why would there be a premium at all?

    Oh. Jon.

    Oh. Jon......

    He's a neighbor of mine.

So far the only thing I can afford of his are some supplies.

Has a real nice shop with some real nice stuff. But he tends to be pricey and favors exotics.

I was at a show with him recently and I think he is a really good guy.

It's not that big a thing (the error) as wittnessed by the/his drop in price now. It was however unsual and documented. I'm not much for these type packaging or wrong dated errors but I can sort of see the shot at investment during (back then) that time. He does have a lot of really different type items and advertises in Coin Woeld a few time a year.
I think he is a good dealer.

In 1994 it might have been worth $1,000. But as soon as 1995 rolled around the value dropped. It's just like when some of these new coins show up. If you've got the first ones people will pay stupid money for then. Then when they decome commonly available the price drops.

  10. Unless there is something different about the coins, i do not see why it would carry a premium now. Wouldn't the Cointalk mantra "buy the coin not the holder/slab" apply here? TC
