Hey @dwhiz ! I once struck a Coin on a Railroad Tie! Nahh, just joking. I used to only put them on the track and check out the results after a nice long freight train would pass on by. We also had Amtrak trains run from NYC to Boston. One of the conductor's would toss me a NY newspaper when he cruised on by. He must of thought we were someone else he knew. He did it for years! Some of them made it across the fence and some.. well, never made it.
It is true grit. Actually these are quite legitimate errors. Striking one piece through sheets of sandpaper with the grit facing the dies was a quick and easy way to re=frost the dies. The trick was to condemn the struck piece afterwards. I remember reading about this when this showed up in a case and Fred bought it. Over the years while opening original rolls to put up as singles in the coin shop I found a couple of pieces with bits of plastic struck into them that I sold to Fred. Never anything major, though.
Or as Flo used to say..."kiss my grits"...! But seriously, had never seen/heard of this particular "error" before...but then I'm no error guy/collector, etc.
Have a credit card branded on your palm, all the seller has to do is scan your hand. They already started using chip implants, ouch. Here is a great idea, use our skin as a planchet. Okay stupid idea!
