Anyone have any good or bad experiences with coin programs, TV, telemarketing, mail orders, etc... Just wondering. Thanks.
I was in a Motel6 last year, and the TV literally had one station on it. Happened to be that coin show where they hawk Morgan dollars that are "rare". I watched it for a while, but generally it wasn't a good experience.
When I was overseas in the Army long before anyone head of an internet I did sign on to a well known mail order outfit that kept my numismatic fires burning a long ways from home...... Thing about these TV and mail order outfits is that they have a large overhead. That translates into higher costs for you. The TV talking heads will do a good job of making you believe that the piece they are hawking is rare and undervalued. That's typically not the case. Most of what you will find on TV or in marketing catalogs is far inflated over what you will find with a local dealer. Shop smart and don't be hooked by the glitz.
I saw that Rick Tomaska's infomerical was selling an 1899 Liberty Double Eagle in MS-62 for $3,300. That's a pretty rich premium as best I can tell, though I'm not well-versed in Liberty DE pricing relative to Saints. I saw MS-62's going for about $2,300 but that was last Fall. Even accounting for the rise in gold which these coins more closely track, that's still a nice markup to overcome.
They still do go around that. TV costs a lot of money and the channels take a cut of the sales so anything like that has a big price increase generally
Compared to some of the garbage my family and friends buy, it's probably a better use of $$$. If they learn about coins from that purchase and then become savvy buyers, it's not a bad price to pay.
Yea at least itll hold some value unlike most of the trinkets you see on shopping networks. Still kind of brutal though for something so common
