I would say no. The only reason why I would even consider it is it’s an 8 feather first year issue Morgan with a low 749,500 mintage.

I would give it an VF20. At that grading I
believe the cost of grading it would outweigh the value.

Saying all that I don’t know what I’m talking about so figured I would reach out :9

    Thanks for any feedback..

    Welcome to the forum! :)

I would not spend any money to grade that coin.

Having anything "graded" by a third party grader (TPG) always brings up the question: Why? If you plan on reselling an item, it might increase the value. If you just want it protected by it being slabbed (you can self-slab for that also), or if it is a family heirloom, then weighing the cost, it may be worth it.
I self-slab most of my coins, but do send in currency for grading and to have it sealed (protected).

Well, it should be worth at least it’s melt down value at the very least.

Guessing a $10 charge and shipping to get it slabbed.
The coin is very dirty. I’m only seeing one bag mark. Some wear on right wing feathers and breast. Love an AU-50 grading but don’t believe it’s likely.

If sending on its own to one of the top two (PCGS or NGC), you'd be looking at $20-$30 for grading plus $8-$10 for handling plus $20ish for return shipping, plus your cost to ship it there. So closer to $50+. At ICG or Anacs it would be less but still well over $10. The only time you will come close to $10 per coin is when Anacs or ICG has a special (and that usually involves sending at least 5 or 10 coins together, depending on the special).

$10? You wish. You are looking at $50 or more in charges, fee, insurance, handling, etc.
BTW, 100% acetone dips won't hurt a coin, but will take off surface dirt, just don't rub the coin. Rinse and pat dry.

Ok, figured I was low balling it. Might try the acetone and just pat dry.

HUGE difference. It is a very flashy coin. It’s hardly A MS62 but maybe an AU?

Came out nice, wonder if a water soak would resolve some of the scruffy looking areas.

Hmm - not sure I liked the result. I like the dirt better but worth the experiment

Yeah, just leaving it as is now. The photos don’t do it any justice. I’m happy the way it came out. It is very flashy, shiny coin. I may just pay the $50-$60 to get it graded. Posted in another forum to see what it might be worth. I’m guessing maybe $75 realistically. We shall see. Thanks for the input.

Your coin may be worth about $50 to $75 graded or not so it's not worth grading.
If your coin comes back as a details grade you are in the hole on it.

Welcome new member. Before having any additional thoughts on grading, Please go to VamWorld.com to try to determine its VAM variety. There are many rare VAM's for the 1878 eight tail feathers. If you have a rare VAM, that would be the only reason to have graded and variety. I would use ICG or ANACS for their variety expertise. They Variety more VAMS than the other two services. Happy coin collecting.

True, if I did it, it would just be from a curiosity stand point. It’s been in a draw for 30 yrs in a felt pouch.

It has 8 tail feathers. No doubt there. I looped it. That’s why it might be worth sending it in. $50 to end the curiosity is worth it. Money well spent.
