I have read several places that a missing clad layer normally happens only on one side, so I'm not sure what to think about this quarter! Is this environmental damage? Or is it actually a partial missing clad layer on both sides! Some of it looks like it might be environmental damage, but some looks like copper! Pictures of the edge are of different sides! Please explain how you reached your decision so I can learn and understand this better. Thanks! PICA0006.jpg PICA0007.jpg PICA0008.jpg PICA0009.jpg PICA0002.jpg PICA0003.jpg

Hey Sarge! I'm betting on PMD/ Chemically altered. Let's see what the jury has to say.:nailbiting:

Sorry, but it's staining from heat or environmental damage. The cladding layer is relatively thick, so you wouldn't expect the color to fade in and out. Also notice that the copper on the edge is discolored

Definitely caused by the environment Sarge but it is pretty. I’d keep that one.

I'll probably keep it just so someone doesn't find it and try to sell it on eBay for thousands of dollars! ;);) Guess I'll just have to keep looking!!!

Look at it this way Sarge. As long as you keep it, you'll never be broke! Seal it, keep it, show it... Thanks.

I think the copper may self-electrolyze onto the outer part of the coin or from another coin and make it appear to be copper, when it's only copper-plated.
