Thanks, I don't normally find my self with a chance to buy a nice coin like this. I was on the fence on whether I wanted to spend the money on it. But I listened to my gut and knew that if I didn't I'd regret not doing it. I even told the dealer, that I regret not buying a coin more than buying a mistake. Well, I'm glad I listened to intuition. Now I have to decide to hold or sell in this insane market. LOL
That's a collector coin. I think it would depend on how good you think it is. I love it in the slab it's in. And wouldn't mind holding it till I could pass it on. I don't know we have been looking at insane fluctuations in the market. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I kinda stepped away from coins for a couple of years. Life took me in a different direction for a while. But coming back, I've noticed prices seem to have exploded, especially for what I mostly collect. Morgan Dollars have gone crazy! I used to buy common date MS-65's for between $100 and $125, MS-66's for around $220 and GSA's for around $190. They have all doubled in price since the beginning of the you know what. I'm rambling now. LOL
At what point does the extensive flattening above the ear figure in? It's obviously an artifact of the strike (as opposed to wear), but it certainly makes the coin less appealing to me. It does exhibit attractive toning but I agree that JTLee's coin is more worthy.
We are glad to have you back! A break (for whatever reason) happens but coins will always be there when you are ready for them. And it is true that prices have skyrocketed the last two years. While toners were already on the way up in 2018/2019, blast white Morgans (even nice ones) were near a multi year low in 2019. I recall passing on some at the $100 level thinking that I don't need any more blast white Morgans (I know a blasphemous thing to say!) and that they would be available for some time at those same price levels. I was certainly wrong! I'm rambling too (so we are in good company ).
Thank you! I will be around, but it won't be as much as I used to be. But, who knows. I have really been bitten by the bug again, just wish it wasn't so hard on the bank account. LOL
I agree! I sent in two Morgans for grading that were better than this coin and they both came back as AU58's
Actually, they were not better than the coin in question. Your two coins graded AU, and the OP coin graded gem MS. So, YOU thought your coins were better, but the TPG did not feel so, accordingly.
Well, the wear above the ear doesn't make it an MS grade! Grading is subjective and whoever graded this OP coin was asleep at the grading table!
That is strike-related, particularly common to a lot of New Orleans mint dates. I pulled out a few for reference.
Here is one of my favorites for the dramatic super weak strike. I sold this one recently after it had been in my collection a long time, but on this one I actually thought the weak strike was kind of cool. There is almost no hair detail above the ear and the eagles breast is 100% bald and smooth.
Here is one I owned for quite a while. But I wound up trading it for an MS-65 '81-S and $50.00 cash. The ironic thing is, I bought it originally for $50.00.
