Of course we all hope they do this, but its a severe reminder that security is ultimately on the dealer. Given current staffing levels of police departments and no desire of some prosecutors to...well prosecute, I would be very nervous as a coin dealer going to certain shows. We have to remember we collect tiny little objects with huge values, perfect targets for thieves just like diamonds, jewelry, etc.
Coincidence that victim went to the bathroom? My money is on fraud. At some earlier and/or later place and time, I wouldn't be surprised when the dealer and one two or three of the others will be found together. With all the cameras in this world and facial recognition on social media this will be solved. That guy with the brown cap and dressed in blue and yellow has a very distinct way in carrying himself. Plus that watch sticks out like a sore thumb.
I guess the operator wouldn't say "yeah, we have people with million-dollar tables all the time, and just getting your neighbor to keep an eye on your table ought to be fine." I have to imagine the vendor who agreed to keep an eye on his stuff, then got distracted by the woman, is going to be getting some heat from the victim. And the other dealers. And his own wife.
I have said this before on another thread. In our city we had a severe home invasion and $500,000 plus in gold coins stolen. Killed two and one lady survived. Sad part is two worked for them. It was brutal. They caught all five and they are all in jail a long time. In this day and age especially with social media, all need to be careful. Another as well has happened in the past. just be careful all. I guess we never know who is watching. Be safe! If someone wants to see the article I can send privately.
Yikes, what city? Anyway, we all do have to not just give it lip service but actually to be careful with what people know and how and where we store our coins, even if not all that valuable because it is the perception that collector coins must have great value that will endanger people.....
No masks allowed in any show I run... and if I'm not running the show I'm not waiting on customers still masking if I don't get the right vibe. Just for my own security. Too many criminals have been emboldened by the fact that covering your face is suddenly acceptable. Smash and grabs, or just garbage like this. Fortunately, even if they took my ENTIRE collection they'd be lucky to get 5K. Unfortunately, someone with a much nicer collection fell victim to evildoers who deserve their arse kicked. I think I read on instagram that they stole these items after security was allowed to visit the bathroom, leaving the floor unsupervised or something. At least these people did this in the show, where there were cameras. Otherwise, they could have been followed home, and the victim may have lost more than their coins... Up to their life.
And the hits just keep on coming. Now there's big trouble in the NYC subway. I'm a born and raised New Yorker. I never thought I'd be saying this, I gotta get out of here. Add in my anguish over Ukraine my anxiety level is through the roof. Sorry for throwing all this out.
This guy is brave, I would have thought that the amount of carrying coin dealers in shows would deter a prick like this
Yeah I'm with the BS/fraud feeling on this... Honestly.. $500k in coins at a show... leave them alone to go to the bathroom... No.. I just don't believe it.. This is gonna turn out to be a scam or an inside job, I have little doubt of it..
Maybe coin shows should take full-face mask-down photos of everyone coming in, with ID. Then thieves would be easier to identify.
