The Agathodaemon was a good spirit/demon that was worshipped by the ancient Egyptians.
He had the shape of a serpent with a human head.
The Greek inscription on the reverse of this coin shows that this is the "neo" or "new" agathodaemon serpent, or, in other words, the new good spirit (of rule by Nero).

Looks like tetradrachm with Poppaea is popular among CT-ers.
    Here is my example. :)

Very nice group John. I have two Nero tets, but this thread is a good reminder that I really ought to add some more of these.

Mine is similar but year three. Note Nero is three years younger and better looking than even on the year 6 coin. Most Alexandrian tetradrachms of Nero are later with the fat boy face.

    pa0090aa2432.jpg

While there are coins showing the human headed snake, this one shows a normal snake wearing the twin crowns of Upper and Lower Egypt. For comparison, this drachm of Antoninus Pius shows the human headed serpent.

As far as I know, when the human head on a serpent is male, it's always supposed to be Serapis.

Funny that this thread appears when it did. I was going to post this Alexandrian tetradrachm later. It's another local coin shop acquisition from a little over a week ago.

This year 13 (66/67 AD) tetradrachm of Nero, featuring Tiberius on the reverse, is not long on legends, and it is somewhat rough, as would be expected with billon, but the portraits are nice. I wonder if this was I coin that I sold all those years ago; it does look familiar, but my mind plays tricks on me.

Also, here are a couple of tetradrachms from Antioch.

    Nero and Claudius.

And last one of his numerous issues from Antioch, this one with a very long, thick Claudius-like neck! It seems that the flan was made in an oval-like shape to accommodate the obverse die.
