First one despite the toning not as a 63 way overpriced and the other coin doesn't show up.

Good lord! There is another for $59.95 without the toning in the same grade. So, I have to assume the seller feels his toner is worth that much more. Seems kind of ridiculous to me.

Peace Dollars with nice toning are tough to find. Some will pay crazy prices for them.

How come you dont see the vibrant toning on Peace dollars as you can find on Morgans?

Can these be toned, say, on a windowsill after they have been slabbed? They are not perfectly sealed from the air..

Not for me, but each to their own. It’s one sided toner that makes it less interesting.

I know, Peace Dollar toners are scarce when the color is natural. Since I am not a toner collector, it doesn’t matter to me. The high prices make them even less of an attraction.

Perhaps because the Peace Dollars were not stored in cloth bags for as long as the Morgan Dollars were. The toned coins were stored with one side or the other touching the bag. The coins in the interior of the bag remained white.

I like toning that adds to eye appeal. IMO, the toning on these distracts from eye appeal. I wouldn't want either one.

@desertgem has posted photomicrographs of Morgan and Peace surfaces. Their texture is different, giving rise to different luster, and different toning behavior.

Nope, not worth the premium. The colors are not that vibrant. And I would not call that a monster toner. I don't think it is very pretty. It is the pastels of bright colors without a lot of additional light that go for big money. At double the going rate for a 23 Peace dollar would be too much IMO. Current market for a 23 in 63 is about $50.

Have seen much better tone patterns...this one is ugly to me, and not really that colorful with such a pattern. Not worth it...not even close...although confess I'm not a rainbow or heavy toner.

Both are the same coin, same slab.

I like the sold price, And think the coin would be 10X better in hand.
    I wouldn't be in it for $1000.
Peace dollars are hard to find with those natural tones.

I wouldn’t pay that much for that coin.
Wouldn’t even pay the $500+ in the original auction.
As others have stated, attractive color on peace $ is much harder to find than on morgans.
I also wouldn’t call that a monster. That term gets thrown around way too much. A coin has to be absolutely ridiculously attractive to be considered a monster in my book. Booming luster and double sided vibrant toning. That peace $ doesn’t have either.

Yes, two different auction listings with two different lighting setups yield to the observer, slightly different renderings of the toning, and maybe more importantly, the luster and contact marks that affect the visual appearance and grade.
Since we're not talking about the grade driving the realized auction results but only the "monster toning" that the Seller attributes to it, the appeal to the potential Buyer would be that they could acquire a coin that has atypical natural toning that the vast majority of that issue in any grade do not possess, and to either keep it for their collection, or in the case of the second auction listing, flip it for a profit.

Personally, compared to other graded Peace Dollar coins that I have seen, this one's Obverse toning is pleasing, and there is precedent at auction for near the price point that the earlier eBay Auction yielded for a pastel-toned Obverse, for example, at Great Collections: https://www.greatcollections.com/Co...Dollar-NGC-MS-63-226-152-133-Toned-from-photo

I have a 22-S Peace with similar obverse toning... exceptional rainbow toning around 12:00, but the rest of the obverse is splotchy/speckled. Reverse is very dark / black though.

I'm sure someone would pay a premium for it if I put it on Ebay, but most people don't seem to find it too attractive. I bought it out of a $30 bin so it's not like I'm losing anything with it.
