Howdy happypooche - Welcome to the Forum !! Can you tell us anything more about what you mean by "missing S" ? I am not aware of any coins of this date and mint mark being described like that
Welcome!! Could you give us some more information? Is it in a envelope or 2X2 that has "missing s" written on it? It could be an altered coin if that's the case. The 1894 with no mint mark is one of the key dates in the Morgan series. Someone might have tried to remove the "s" mint mark. I would love to see the coin if you could post a picture of it. If you could get a nice closeup of the area above the D and O in dollar on the reverse, we could probably tell you what is going on with it. Look for scratches or signs of machining there. It still has potential value, even if it's altered. Some collectors will never own a 1894 P, and it would be a nice addition to their collection.
Need to see good pictures of both sides. Another possibility is a filled die and one of the S's in the legend is missing. There are four S's in the inscriptions besides a possible mintmark.
I will post pictures as soon as I can. I will post pictures as soon as I can. Thank you all for your responses. I hope it is worth your while and it turns out to be adecent coin. I have a feeling Becky is right and the "S" has been removed. Not by my Grandfather, but by someone in the distant past.
1894 S "missing S" I am going to see if a friends digital camera can take a good close up for your inspection.
