So I recently picked up a 1945 s Merc not even thinking it was a micro s. I payed 20 bucks for it so I can't complain. But I reached out to ngc and they said they will fix it for free. But I was wondering what you guys would do? Would it Carry a bit more value? Cause it's mislabled?
Yes absolutely then! Label errors don't really add much value because it doesn't affect the coin and the market for them is small, so yes you should definitely send it back
Ok that's what I was wondering thank you everyone I'm so new to all this I didn't want to send it back if it would carry more value. Can't complain for an anniversary gift plus first graded dime purchase in the collection.
Honestly I'd leave it alone at least for the foreseeable future. It doesn't make a ton of difference either way, but if you send it to get fixed you're going to be looking at 3-4 months before you get it back right now. It's taking them about 3 weeks just to open the packages they receive much less do anything with them
Having the Micro S on the label will increase the desirability of the coin if you plan on selling it. It will also demand a higher price, IMHO. So, I would send it back immediately for that label change.
By the way just for future reference, you don't have to hide the certification number, it doesn't lead to any private information or anything, it's just there mainly for people to verify that it is actually graded by NGC and not counterfeit.
You figuratively stole that coin which I believe has the middle of 3 size S that were stuck only in 1945 on the "Mercury" dime. I somewhere have all 3 together where it's quite obvious. Here is a comparison of the believed large and Micro size s. If you compare yours to my photo side by side, I believe you'll see the difference in the thickness of the rising leg (thicker on Micro), size of upper opening (smaller on Micro), and upper ending (virtually closed on Micro). Judge for yourself, but if they will relabel, take their offer. I've had problems when I submitted a sharp full all-3 bands micro-s to them. I eventually just gave up on them after 2 tries. I kept my all 3 "full-bands", and acquired an expensive Gem PCGS 1945 Micro-s FB, which isn't, to show interested parties the difference between reality and illusion/fantasy. The re-label will increase the coins' value! JMHO
Wow nice coin, send it back it would be to your advantage. Thanks for sharing and good luck with your decision.
@Newbee03 There is no value for NGC not denoting the Micro S on the Label; there is, however, approximately a 290% increase in the market value for the Micro S designation in the grade of MS-65, so even taking into consideration your cost for shipping and perhaps insurance, you would still be ahead if you sent it back for a Revised Label (and Reholdering). The NGC Population for the Micro S is far fewer (471 vs. 1,817) than the Regular Issue coin at MS-65, and, the mintmark on your coin is nice and sharp, which for those that do want to collect this issue for the Micro S, would IMO make it more desirable if you auctioned it. Just a suggestion--use Denatured or Isopropyl Alcohol and not Acetone to remove the marker residue from the slab.
Wow! The 'Merc's are a cool little coin, for sure. I've dug up a bunch and it's a real delight when they pop out of the ground, not often enough. Never seriously thought about them seriously, until just now, seeing the terrific one that Newbee revealed. I may not be able to do anything too serious yet, until I can get a little bit deeper into the Walking Liberty Halves. I'm about halfway through them, mostly purchased from different eBay dealers. Thanks for sharing that sharp Merc; my life might be changed. (Cited from: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/wo...95254/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email)
Since the micro S brings a higher premium and they will reholder/relabel it for free I'd send it in. If I was planning on keeping this coin in my collection for a while the 3+ month turn around time wouldn't be an issue.
