The man who picked up the pieces after the year of the five emperors and no longer hid "the wolf" that the emperors had been holding by the ears and been hiding from the Roman People, the fact that the army is where all power resonates, was born on this date 1,877 years ago.

You know the routine, post any and all the coins you have relating to, as he would've pronounced it, Sheptimius Sheverus, one of the very BEST and very WORST of Romes emperors:cigar:

None of my best Severus-Severan coins are photographed, so here's a few random ones with dealer photos. I also have a very decrepit provincial with vis-a-vis busts of Severus and Albinus (I think my only Albinus coin).

Severus did leave his sons with some great advice. Too bad Caracalla only listened to the army bit.

Attribution Notes: Varbanov lists 17 crescent/star types; note gap in reverse legend; most do not have this.
CNG Web Shop 19445 is a rev. die match, but has "I" in obverse legend; not visible on mine. CNG's attribution: SNG Cop. 269 var. (legends); BMC Thrace 17 var. (rev. leg.).

Here is a fairly worn sestertius, but I always feel lucky whenever I can afford any SS Imperial AE, no matter how worn:

Great post @Ryro! I have way too many Severan coins to post, so I'll just share my two favorite provincial portraits (Stobi and Marcianopolis.)

And this is my most recent Septimius addition, which I don’t think I’ve posted before:

Well, OK, despite my bias for Geta, I will admit I have a particular fondness for this one. It was one of my first really nice Roman coins. Love the detail of all the squigglies in the eagle's wings on the reverse. Similar to Al Kowsky's contribution.

Septimius Severus 208-209 AD. AR Tetradrachm of Laodicea ad Mare, Seleucis and Pieria. ΑΥΤ•ΚΑΙ• •CЄOYHΡOC•C•, laureate and draped bust to right / ΔΗΜΑΡΧ•ΕΞ•ΥΠΑΤΟC•ΤϕÕ, eagle standing facing with spread wings, head to left, and wreath in beak; star between legs. McAlee, Severan Group 3, 25; Prieur 1149. 13.78g, 28mm, 12h.
