First, I voted and don't know the answer. How do you define a scratch, hairline or sometimes a very fine scratch will not be obvious unless the coin is in a certain orientation to the light. For most folks, hairlines are best seen in a dark room using a Fluorescent is best for microscopic exams. I ALSO break rules and never follow instructions. will be back to find answer though!! to learn..
Stop all of this nonsense. Rotate and tilt the coin under a light source. You'll either see stuff or you won't.
Where should the light be placed to best see the hairline scratch? If ya can't see the scratch then how do you know which direction is 90-degrees (perpendicular) to the scratch? If you're asking where is the light in the picture that shows the scratch then the answer is 90-degrees...duh.
In all seriousness would someone other than skipper-doo explain what it is you think you've learned from this thread.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but that seems exactly wrong to me. This scratch is from an object being dragged across the coin's face from top to bottom (or vice versa), but you'll see it most clearly if the light is coming from one side. Unless you're talking about the force the scratching object exerts as it drives metal out of its groove to either side... but that's getting a little abstract, isn't it?
ldhair, posted: "I'm working on it." Actually, you answered the question already. When a scratch is parallel to the light it is not as easy to see (and as you can see) virtually disappeared under a 20X microscope. As soon as the light (or the coin) starts to rotate to the perpendicular position, the scratch jumps out. So Overhead is incorrect and 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock is incorrect in this case. EITHER 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock are correct answers. I tried to hide the fact that both positions are correct to get you to think about it more - with no luck. slackaction1, posted: "First, I voted and don't know the answer. Once you see the mark it can be defined. Everyone needs to learn the difference and because of subjectivity there is some overlap.]For most folks, hairlines are best seen in a dark room using a Fluorescent is best for microscopic exams. Looks like 18 over 18 And for the poll, I would say from all angles, because a scratch can be in different directions
I’m 3:00 but more like 4:30. Hit the scratch angle. No 4:30 picks. Out of the box thinking like @Insider You could get really good at it.
