Secret Marks on Coins

As many of you know, the Banknote Companies issued Postage Stamps with secret marks as a deterrent to counterfeiting. I suspect these exist on currency also. Has anyone found secret marks placed on our coins by Mint Engravers?

Excellent! Will you please tell ALL OF US what you discovered and which coins they were on?

 

Perhaps a freedom of information request of the Secret Service can answer this question.

I doubt any of this information is left in public records as it was done a very long time ago. I'll bet that the marks on stamps were found by collector researchers.

The one that came to mind is the 1952 FS-901 Quarter.

Skip, could you please enlighten us? I honestly don’t know what to look for. I’ve heard that “hidden watermarking” was done to coins, as well as banknotes. However, I have no idea about where or of what variety they are. Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, pretty please, please please please please please pulleze, por favor, bitte, per picaire, DO TELL US!

As someone who collects IHC varieties, 1875 Snow-16 FS-801 Dot Cent came to mind pretty quickly. Supposedly that was added in an effort to catch a Mint employee suspected of pocketing coins. The dot is prominent enough to be identified even in low grade - there is a PCGS AG03 with a trueview on Coinfacts.

That one is even listed in the Red Book, for... some reason.

 

I forgot all about that. I just printed out the NN article to read to see what I revealed.

Could be the case. While it may not actually be considered a secret mark; the thought has crossed my mind that the oh so subtle design changes we have continue to discover in the same US coin series over time may actually be anti-counterfeiting measures. Information the Mint shared exclusively with and only with the Secret Service. Probably not the case. But?
