I was on another post and had a vivid memory for the time (one time) I buried my coins. (see: dirty ears). I was curious if this was a common trait among coin collectors (of any age). I was only about 12 years old when I did my digging. I understand it might just be a family thing, but was curious.
I was about that age. I buried a baggie of world coins that my grandpa had given me, I never did find them though when I went to dig them up. They are probably still there.
Never buried them. I did use to drop silver dollars down the air ducts in my house, though. For a small fee, I'll tell you where I used to live, and you can buy the house and search away.
When I was 7 or 8 I buried a whole bunch of comics in the back yard. I don't remember what I buried them in but I could never find them when my family decided to move when I was 17. So they have been in the back yard for over 20 years!! I never buried any coins. My great grandma used to save all of her money and then bury it in the yard (so the tax people would find it). The only reason they made it through the depression is because she never used a bank. They were also able to buy more land in 1933. All of the 5000+ acres are still in the family today. When my great grandma died she had a key to safe deposit box at a bank. She said when she died go to the box and get everything out. My family went to the box and inside was lots of pictures and the various other thing....well while searching the box we found a treasure map. The map was of grandma's front yard. She had buried money in mason jars all over the yard. Each jar had a different type of coin. Like she would have a jar with buffalo nickels, wheat cents, peace dollars and many more. I don't remember how many mason jars there were but there was well over fifty. Anyways we can across a jar with a stack of 100 1957 silver certificates all unc in serial # order. We divided everything among the family.
As a boy in the early to late '50's I enjoyed being an adventurous "buccaneer". I cobbled together my own wooden pirate ships . . .And true to the maritime tradition, I placed a 'silver" coin in the keel as an offering to Neptune. . .My Dad worked in a bank and he would bring me a shinny new "silver" coin whenever I asked for it.( As I remember it started out as dollars but became dimes and nickels as Dad realized what I was doing with them!) You see, I was a great pirate, but lousy navigator and wrecked a number of my ships in the streams and ponds. :hammer: Years later when my daughter bought her PWC, I embedded a silver coin in the keel; I still honored the tradition not wishing to annoy the sea gods! LoL!
I never buried any but one of my brothers did. Then they were forgotten and then we moved. As far as i know they're still there. I'm sure it wasn't a big hoard or anything, probably no more than a couple dollars in change, but it was in the early 60's so I'm sure unless it was all cents that there is silver there. I've always wanted to take my metal detector and look for them but I'm nervous about going to the current owners and asking if I can dig up their yard.
