Syria, Coele-Syria. Chalkis ad Libanon. 1st century BC. Æ 21mm.
Obv: Helmeted and draped bust of Athena right.
Rev: The Dioskouroi standing vis-à-vis, each holding spear; monograms around.

Awesome gallery of helmets! Some even look like safari hats but I guess in ancient times that wasn't a thing.

The one from Paeonia shared by @robinjojo is amazing!!! Never seen this type before. Thank you so much for sharing (and my wish list keeps growing)

 

Interesting thread! Helmets in their varieties do a appear on a LOT of ancient coins. I'd forgotten some of my own (like the big facing Justinians) had helmets at all.

I have lots of Corinthian helmets with heads inside, but a couple new purchases (still en route) are without (BCD Lokris-Phokis 198 and 197, both ~0.4g or slightly lighter, these are the 2010 photos by NAC):




(On those ones it looks rather like the bull is considering testing the integrity of the helmets upon impact.)

I suppose my favorite helmet with a head inside would be this elaborately decorated one on a New Style Tetradrachm:



However... I really wish that Stephen Corn (c. 1942/3 – 2018) hadn't cleaned it (I assume it was him, since all his looked similar, but suppose it could've been done by Tom Cederlind, from whom Corn bought it, or by someone at HJB, where the collection was dispersed after his death). Here it was in its fully glory at Münzen & Medaillen GmbH (DE) Auction 40 (Munich, 4 June 2014), Lot 196:



I'm patient, though; the tone will come back. (Or some kind of toning will.)

I am sure they had padding in the helmets. If not, wearing them would be worse than the fighting.
