I found this the other day while coin roll searching....Take a look at the reverse where,
and I don't know why, the copper is exposed and it looks absolutely perfect.
It's a 1944s....what can you recommend that I use to try and get the rest of the junk
off? I don't usually do this on something this old, but every time I see how perfect the
exposed area is...Well... I gotta try and see if the rest of the reverse is in that condition.
Any ideas? ( Let me say thanks ahead of time )

A sharp knife and try to get under it. But really, if that’s what I think it is, it’s stuck on pretty solid. At some point, even after a long soak, in whatever, you’re going to have to get in there and pry it off, as it won’t loosen for anything. Removed this myself on cents.

An acetone soak perhaps? But it might be in there so long that you'll need to hide it from the light. Just not sure that you'll be able to get it to float off or dissolve.

Here is a similar one that I soaked in acetone for a short time and then just lifted the foreign material off. That is shown in the last photo. There are several photos showing the stages.

As you can see under the goo was a nice clean coin.

Ya know, at first glance it looks like many coins that had glue or some other substance on it, but when I enlarged the reverse and took a closer look at the E in CENT, I can't figure out what is going on. Looks like the metal was peeled back. Very strange.

If you do a soak or other restoration, be sure to post the results.

Well I have been slowly working on that 1944s cent I found that appeared to have an outer "skin" of plastic or ? I have been soaking it in acetone....A little bit today, tomorrow leave it alone...Next day soak it again...Noticed a little bit of a change but not too much....Until the night I forgot to take the coin out of the acetone and it sat there for longer than usual...I think that is what freed up the outer skin though and it came off...I used a toothpick to get it off...Still got some more soaking to do to try and remove a few stains here and there...Camera took a blurry pic of the obverse...It looks like the reverse does..What do you guys think?

I’ve had a similar experience. Yours could have been glued into an advertisement or something once.. just a thought. Acetone pulled the entire goo spot in one piece! Took just minutes, and now the coin looks great.

You know I didn't think about that coin being glued to an advertisement...How many small shops downtown have front glass windows, and front glass doors where they could tape signs /posters to with who knows what glued to it....Thanks Evan for bringing that to my/our attention...I'm willing to bet that's what happened.

I love the wheat s on the reverse....I mean the whole coin looks ...to me anyway, in X shape...But the wheat s on the reverse...The lines on the upper portion...The lines are perfect...Wow.
