That is a nice, nice woody. I want one just like it. I keep saying I'm done with my lincolns then I find one that I have to have and put it in my set.
Put me down for MS-65 BN. I had PMed Thad with a guess shortly after he posted the thread and certainly before he had posted the results.
If this is not corrosion following the pattern of the planchet defects, then I'm full of it. (possible) It's one of those situations where knowing the reason for the distracting striations is key to determining if it is damaged after minting or part of a group of damaged planchets. There just seems to be too much relief on the striations for me to think it's just the planchets. Perhaps it's just overanalysis of the photo. But I wouldn't pay MS prices for it with this many unanswered questions. If this isn't corrosion following the planchet striations, then you benefit from people like me who would avoid this and leave it to the more knowledgeable to find.
One good thing about this thread is that it has spurred me into reading about Woodies, which is an area where I am woefully ignorant. Anything different can add value IF there is a demand for them. My Large Cent varieties only have value because a market exists for varieties. Getting widespread interest in woodies can only help increase demand for them and thus the price/value.
I am not commenting on whether or not you are, but from the reverse photo you can tell that the coin is in an NGC slab, so as far as damage NGC doesn't seem to think so. I take them at their word over a photograph any time.
Thad, since I respect your knowledge of Lincolns, can you comment? I have heard from several on different forums, that DGS trys to grade strictly, but so many suspect favoritism and that it seems to be a cross between self grading and TPG, that the pricing of DGS coins/per grade, are even less than ANACS. What do you think? Jim
I am late to this.. Nice woody.. I have a slight woody . ( Ha Just realized how that sounded..) nothing as nice as that.. I didn't want to ruin the end of this post for myself and read what the grade is before I guess.... She is MS.. The Obverse is Sweet.. MS65... I may be just a bit off..Maybe MS64 Now to the end of the Post to see if I am correct... OK.. OK.. I had to Edit.. Well Add this.. I see that my guess was a Bit Low.. But I would bet dead on for PCGS/NGC.. I don't think they would give her that grade.. Still very nice
