I found this coin at the bottom of a dresser drawer today. This is one of the first ancients I purchased, and it has been sitting around making friends with the dust bunnies and spiders over the past 40 or so years. As I recall I purchased this coin out of a box of budget ancients, with no identification provided. It looks a lot like the bronze coins of the Thessalian League, but it could be Seleucid, but I've not seen that reverse type used for their coinage. The coin itself could be billon; at least that's what it looks like in hand. As I recall I carried it around in a pocket for a while, but not with other coins. The coin measures 25mm at the widest point, and it weighs 10.07 gram. Can anyone help? Thanks
Not my area, I can read ΚΑΙΣΑΡΟΣ then 3 illegible characters, could it be ΣΕΒ (?) And on the other side ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ. that narrows somewhat I hope
Not my area of knowledge either… so this opinion shouldn’t hold much weight until you can match it against reference examples… but it looks cast to me. Reverse is similar to this: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=6683741 Maybe a fantasy coin as (to me) the obverse and reverse seem to be about 230 years apart? Again… not my area of interest so just some guesses!
That the coin could be a cast did cross my mind. Aside from the Thessalian League coins that I have seen in the past, the OP coin doesn't quite fit the pattern. It came, as I mentioned, from a box of unidentified ancients, back around 1980, and being new to this segment of numismatics, my level of expertise was nil. So, I'll keep on looking online for anything that is even a remote match. Thanks for helping!
