I have a 1866 5 cent piece where the last number of the date is noticeably out of alignment. I just have general reference books and no mention about this exists in print. Since it is not doubling or from the "Repunched Date" variety, I thought this must be typical for the strike on this coin. I just need someone to confirm.
Why do you say, Since it is not doubling or from the "Repunched Date" variety? Need a photo -within the Sheild Nicks there is a ton of die varieties and repunched dates, etc. Many are fabulous, got to have a pic?
That could be a re punched date. I don't have any books with me (at the office) so I am not sure if the 1866 is one known to be re-punched.
Maybe I interpreted the picture in the Red Book wrong. Their example shows the re-punch clearly on top of another date. I thought that was the prerequisite for this terminology. I don't see any evidence of it on this coin. Am I missing something in my understanding?
Does anyone else have information on this? I'm still trying to clarify the strike characteristics on the date.
I just looked in CPG and nothing matches up in my edition. I't so worn it's hard to tell and the photos need to be a little clearer. I will give you this, the postion of the round thing above the date will be the key cause it is centered pretty far west for the type - find the die with that and you'll have your die #. You'll have to get to a book containing more dies for shield nicks. I don't have one but others may. One more thing don't get to thinking it's very valuble, it's probably not. There are tons of shield RPD's, DDO's and everything in the kitchen sink within that series. Combine that with the grade and well,,, They are so common finding one in nice shape without some doubling is harder than finding a regular one.
That looks like a normal 1866 - I personally think their is only one 1866 RPD that brings a premium(1866/1866 - FS 1.0, 1.1 and FS 1.2). See the attached for one close to the FS 1.2, but not quite just like it. This is a repunched date - not a very pretty coin, but still a solid RPD. This are almost as fun as the DDO on the coin.
